Google's Niantic Labs launches Field Trip app for Android, helps the working world play hooky

Image

While Apple struggles to figure out how to help its users find their way, the mapping experts at Google have just launched a way to get folks to diverge a bit from their given path. Field Trip, released for Android by Google-owned Niantic Labs, runs in the background on your Android handset, eagerly waiting for you to get near a point of interest. Once that happens, it leaps into action, showing you a card for one of thousands of cool locations -- historic spots, museums, restaurants and the like. Google's partnered with a bunch of taste makers for the project, including Flavorpill, Cool Hunting and its own Zagat, to get things done. You can vote choices up and down, change the frequency of pop ups and post your findings to Twitter, Facebook and that one Plus social network. There's also a driving mode serves as an auditory tour guide when you're behind the wheel. The app's available now as a free download in Play. The iOS version, on the other hand, is coming soon.

Psst... yes, it appears to be US-only for now. Bah, humbug.

Want some taste with that 'diet' ice cream? | The Salt Lake Tribune

Food ? Big brands says their mid-calorie goodies cut down on what?s bad for you.

New York ? Nonfat cheese that tastes like plastic. Low-calorie soda that leaves a bitter aftertaste. Sugar-free brownies that crumble like Styrofoam.

Dieters have learned an important lesson. When you take the fat and calories out of your favorite treats, you sometimes have to say goodbye to the taste, too.

But snack brands such as Dreyer?s/Edy?s ice cream, Hershey?s chocolate and Lay?s potato chips are trying to solve this age-old dieter?s dilemma by rolling out mid-calorie goodies that have more fat and calories than the snacks of earlier diet crazes but less than the original versions. They?re following the lead of soda companies such as Pepsi and Dr Pepper that introduced mid-calorie drinks last year.

It?s hard to isolate sales of mid-calorie snacks because they also usually have reduced fat, or other healthy attributes such as reduced sodium. But sales of all foods and drinks in which the amount of things such as fat, sugar, salt, carbohydrates have been actively reduced during production have risen 16 percent to $51.72 billion since 2006, according to research firm Euromonitor International.

The mid-calorie trend is hitting at a time when companies that make sugary and salty treats are being blamed for the country?s expanding waistlines. The problem is that the same things that make snacks taste good ? sugar, salt, calories ? also make them fattening. And many Americans don?t want to sacrifice taste at snack time. Shaving a few calories enables companies to market their cakes, cookies and chips as healthier without the stigma of bad taste that goes along with some low-fat products.

The mid-calorie trend is a toned-down version of the "light" craze that started in the 1990s. Back then, "low fat" or "no fat" was all the rage. But the products often fizzled.

For instance, McDonald?s rolled out the McLean Deluxe, a low-fat burger, in 1991. But the burger, which was made with seaweed, had dismal sales. It disappeared from restaurants within five years.

Similarly, Lay?s in 1998 introduced Wow fat-free potato chips that use fat substitute Olestra. But the ick factor trumped healthiness when the Food and Drug Administration said the chips had to come with a warning that Olestra may cause abdominal cramping, loose stools, and that it inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients.

The FDA dropped the requirement for the label in 2004 after studying the matter. The chips were renamed "Light," but sales have not recovered.

The new era of diet food started in the past decade. In 2007, companies began offering 100-calorie packs of popular snacks like Oreos cookies and Twinkies cakes. That?s when brands started putting their focus on reducing calories ? without any flavor change.

story continues below

Reducing a nominal number of calories in your diet each day ? even from that morning coffee run or afternoon visit to the vending machine for chips ? is an effective way to battle obesity, says David Levitsky, professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell University.

But in order for that to work you have to eat the snacks in moderation. "If consumption of ice cream and potato chips does not increase and people eat somewhat better versions, the outcome will be good," Brownell says.

First, companies have to convince dieters that their mid-calorie snacks are not only healthy, but tasty, too.

With that in mind, Hershey?s in June introduced Simple Pleasures, chocolate with 30 percent less fat. A serving size of six pieces equals 180 calories and 8 grams of fat ? that?s 30 calories and 5 grams of fat less than the original Hershey?s chocolate bar. The company is hoping the deficit is enough to lure chocolate lovers who want to eat healthier.

Similarly, Lay?s in July rolled out two new flavors of its Kettle Cooked potato chips with 40 percent less fat. The brand, which fries chips in small batches so as to use less oil than the continuous frying process for regular chips, introduced "Applewood Smoked BBQ" and "Sun-Dried Tomato and Parmesan."

The company says it was able to lower the calories and fat without sacrificing taste. Regular Kettle Cooked chips have 160 calories and 9 grams of fat, while the reduced-fat versions have 130 calories and 6 grams of fat.

Pollution-Eating Clothing Heads Toward Commercialization

3088429317_05a0c51605A new laundry detergent that coats?clothing in pollution-eating nano-particles is on its way to store shelves. The "CatClo" detergent would expand the hot new trend in green fashion to those environmentally consciousness consumers who want to purify the air without buying from couture brands. "If thousands of people in a typical town used the additive, the result would be a significant improvement in local air quality," said University of Sheffield Professor Anthony Ryan.

HTC One X+ makes first unofficial appearance

Android Central

A T-Mobile-branded HTC One X+ has made its first appearance appearance on Twitter in a wholly unofficial manner. Though we don't get much more than this brief glimpse, we've heard previously about a handful of specs.

  • Size: 134.36 x 69.9 x 9.3mm
  • Weight: 129g
  • NVIDIA AP37 1.6GHZ quad core, 1.7GHZ single core
  • ROM:32GB
  • RAM: 1 GB
  • Battery: 1800 mAh
  • Android 4.1 Sense 4.5

Keep in mind that this is all well within the realm of speculation for the time being, but so far, things are looking pretty solid. The only other upcoming HTC device really on our radar at this point is the Droid Incredible X,, which may be finding its way to Verizon

In any case, there doesn't seem to be anything particularly exciting about the front face of this device. I'm curious to see the other side, if only to get a sense of what kind of camera is on there. Any T-Mobile customers itching for a fresh HTC phone?

Charlotte New Homes Sales Dip | Resale Prices Hit 5-Year High

New U.S. single-family home sales eased in August but held near two-year highs and prices vaulted to their highest level in more than five years, adding to signs of a broadening housing market recovery.

The Commerce Department said on Wednesday sales slipped 0.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted 373,000-unit annual rate. July?s sales pace was revised up to a 374,000-unit pace, the highest level since April 2010, from the previously reported 372,000 units.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast sales at a 380,000-unit rate last month. Compared to August last year, new home sales were up 27.7 percent.

Despite the month-on-month dip in sales, the report was consistent with other data that have suggested a turn-around in the housing market after collapsing in 2006 and igniting the 2007-09 recession.

Home resales surged last month and homebuilder sentiment jumped to a six-year high in September. However, the housing market recovery lacks sufficient strength to take the baton from manufacturing as the main driver of the economic recovery.

Playful gender-bending at the Paris fashion shows

(AP) ? Blurring the lines between the masculine and feminine is as old as Shakespeare.

Wednesday's fashion week previews in Paris ? the second of eight days on the spring-summer 2013 calendar ? showed that, over the centuries, playful gender-bending has lost none of its creative allure.

Dries Van Noten, who cut his teeth as a men's designer in Antwerp, produced the day's strongest show, mixing traditional menswear cuts with his own floral signature in a harmonious play on color.

Damir Doma, meanwhile, who also trained in Antwerp, fused masculine-tinged Cossack gear, martial arts dress and buckles alongside more feminine touches.

Black, an unusual color for spring, also featured highly on the rotation list ? with London's Gareth Pugh channeling a dark hard, masculine femininity that seemed to indicate the 31-year-old designer was coming of age.

Thursday's shows include Manish Arora, Balmain and Nina Ricci.

DRIES VAN NOTEN

Dries Van Noten once said: "The more clashing it is, the more that I like it!"

This statement should have been proven true by the Antwerp designer's patterned and flowery ode to spring ? a commanding show that mixed up wildly divergent textures, styles, cuts and shapes.

He presented ruffled 3-D flower appliques and floral prints mixed with blown-up Prince of Wales check, plaid, tartan and beaded denim. Those were pursued eccentrically down the catwalk by sheer organza shirts, metallic menswear jackets and oversized peplums.

Yet the preview, incredibly, was of the most harmonious Van Noten shows in some time, owing to its fine tonal color palette. Traditional tartans blended softly into a haze of faded orange, peach, rose, nude, russet, silver and duck egg blue.

It felt like spring was in the air.

DAMIR DOMA

Croatian-born designer Damir Doma went East in an ambitious show that included Russian Cossack garb, Oriental kimono-sleeve jackets and even white belted karate tops.

Tight, high-waisted looks and a peppering of leather Obi-belts were followed by baggier silhouettes with dropped centers of gravity. Colors ranged from black, brown and navy to turquoise blue and cobalt.

If there was one theme that brought cohesion to the motley ensemble it was this: deconstruction. Almost a signature style for any graduate of Belgium's avant-garde fashion capital Antwerp ? like Dries Van Noten ? Doma exposed paneling, buckles, zips and fastenings on his clothes.

"Of course I am avant-garde, I'm from Antwerp," Doma said backstage. "I just cut things up, break and put them together: A collage."

GARETH PUGH

"Hard femininity," was how Gareth Pugh described his show, inspired, he says, by the rawness of Latin American cockfighting.

Sure enough, black nappa kimono looks opened the collection swirling stiffly and authoritatively ? with one model in a two-foot mourning veil.

However, the raw shock-factor ? Pugh's signature ? was short-lived for once. It soon gave way to a series of softer, elegant and more mature looks in sweeping vermilion, black fringing and pale dove gray.

The Latin feel was captured in a series of textured 3-D ruffles reflecting a coiffed, full-breasted cock, ready for the fight.

The designer's introspection was tangible, from the simplicity of the decor to Rebekah del Rio's haunting a capella singing to the clean, highly wearable silhouettes. Could Wednesday's show have been a coming of age for London's enfant terrible?

"Some things happened to me recently," Pugh said. "Sometimes you just can't help changing, some things are out of control."

GUY LAROCHE

"I love Frank Gehry," Guy Laroche designer Marcel Morongiu said after his uber-refined collection, which channeled the famed U.S. architect's buildings.

What the collection pulled off was no small feat: Downsizing with panache the spirit of Gehry's sculptural lines and volumes to fit the svelte female form. Long silhouettes slinked by with panels that flapped stiffly and with on-trend angular cutouts ? replacing the house DNA's vibrant colors with streamlined elegance.

Another lofty reference was to Brazil's master architect Oscar Niemeyer ? whose landmark contemporary art museum in Rio that features bold central paneling was evoked by outfits with strapped or sexily exposed midriffs.

Sex appeal is from the waist and above and long is back ? the show seemed to declare.

In addition to the architecture master class, the Guy Laroche team also hit the science lab.

A fantastic new material was made especially for the show: A double crepe, silk and viscose Nutty Professor concoction that gave a curious stiffness to the clothes, including a show-stopping, knee-length, laser-cut navy coat.

NHL lockout could mean happy returns for ticket ... - Financial Post

There?s not much that could convince me to become a Toronto Maple Leafs fan ? except maybe a 5% return.

A diehard Buffalo Sabres fan, I received notice from my team this month that in the event of a labour dispute in the National Hockey League I could get a refund on my purchased tickets. The players have been locked out since last week.

My beloved Sabres, who are owned by a billionaire, said if I let them hold onto my money they would pay me annual interest of 4%, which would start accruing after the games I purchased were cancelled.

Much to my chagrin, the Leafs are offering an even better rate to their season ticket holders.

?Leafs season ticket holders have an option: They can choose to be refunded monthly, should games be cancelled, and receive 1% interest, or they can leave their money on account where they will earn 5% interest,? said Pat Park, director of media relations with the team.

Across the NHL, it seems fans are being presented with this magical investment opportunity ? to get a return on their funds that any pension fund manager would be happy to accept.

The Vancouver Canucks are offering up to 3%. Likewise for the Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens. The Edmonton Oilers might be checking out hockey rinks in Seattle for a new location but for now their fans will be getting a 4% return on their money.

But nothing beats the cash being handed out south of the border where reports have circulated that have both the Florida Panthers and Minnesota Wild offering a meaty 10% return for fans if they let their cash ride with the team.

The money on file, with the accumulated interest, is eventually used to pay for future tickets ? assuming they play hockey again.

We hope it?s a short lockout so we don?t spend our time and energy refunding a game here and a game there

So why are the teams offering a rate of return I can?t possibly get on a guaranteed income certificate? For the most part it seems to be goodwill but also the hassle of returning all that money.

?We have had tremendous fan support since the start of our franchise,? said Aaron Sickman, a spokesman for the Minnesota Wild. ?They?ve been coming back to us in droves and we want to encourage our fans to keep their money with us. We hope it?s a short lockout so we don?t spend our time and energy refunding a game here and a game there.?

Marc Ganis, a sports consultant and president of Chicago-based SportsCorp Ltd., laughs when I tell I?m thinking of getting Wild season?s tickets and betting on a prolonged strike. ?That?s pretty impressive,? he says, about the 10% rate, adding the risk is probably minimal because he can?t remember the last time ticket holders lost their money because of a bankrupt franchise.

Mr. Ganis says the administration cost of refunding tickets is one reason why teams will pay interest to keep fans but he said the high rate might be seen as positive indicator the delay may be short. ?By doing this, it?s not a lot of money and it looks good on them,? he says. ?For this type of interest, I?d let the money roll.?

Certified financial planner Ted Rechtshaffen says it probably makes sense to leave your money with the team, if you know you are coming back to hockey when the labour dispute is over. ?The bottom line is do you want your money or do you know you are going to buying the tickets anyway, then it?s gravy,? says Mr. Rechtshaffen.

Of course, all of this is based on the premise that the underlying tickets were a worthwhile investment to begin with. ?If I was advising someone, I?d say 10% interest is great but then you turn that money into $150 hockey tickets which may or may not be the best investment,? he says. ?It?s only 10% on money that is 100% committed to buying hockey tickets.?

Maybe it?s time to just forget about buying hockey tickets. That might be the best investment I ever make.

Fantastic Fest 2012: 'The Conspiracy' ? clever filmmaking ...

The Conspiracy
Directed by Christopher MacBride
Screenplay by Christopher MacBride
2012, Canada

Though it boasts a fictional storyline and plenty of fabricated found footage, The Conspiracy is fascinated with the earnest yet untenable obsession of the real conspiracy theorist. Ostensibly a straight-faced mockumentary about two filmmakers (Aaron Poole and Jim Gilbert) interviewing local conspiracy theorist Terrance G. (Alan C. Peterson), the opening third of The Conspiracy is Christopher MacBride?s sounding board for popular real-world conspiracies. The audience is inundated with speculation about 9/11, the JFK assassination, massive surveillance operations, and the New World Order?all presented with respect but objective detachment by MacBride.

This allows for the necessary introduction into the film?s world, but MacBride also draws the viewer into the frenzied mindset of conspiracy theorists. Whether you are a believer or not (and it?s unclear where exactly MacBride stands), it is nonetheless fascinating and rewarding to imagine the world that exists above and behind our own, providing its own sinister will in place of tragic chaos. And once it?s tapped into that reservoir of paranoia and awe, the film pretty much has your rapt attention.

In the process of filming the doc, Jim and Aaron discover that Terrance has gone missing. After finding his apartment ransacked, Aaron logically gathers the clippings and items of interest from Terrance?s conspiracy board and recreates it at home. At first seeming to be a collection of random and disconnected events and legislations, Aaron quickly discovers the?through-line?that Terrance had been plotting. As he descends into conspiratorial lunacy, Jim begins questioning the continued investigation. But the evidence stacks up and, with the help of the mysterious Mark Tucker (Bruce Clayton), the two launch a dangerous caper. The acting here is naturalistic and by and large seamless with a fantastic gallery of characters.

The first half, even with its wild postulating, is recognizable, by-the-numbers documentary filmmaking. It?s convincing and interesting, but also totally routine. In the second half, though, MacBride crafts a tense and taut found-footage thriller that uses its format unexpectedly well. It?s a surprising turn that?s not only exciting but begins to undermine the assumed nature of the film and reveal its hidden complexity. It?s impossible to describe what exactly Macbride does here without spoiling the fun, but suffice it to say this is very clever filmmaking that knows exactly how to toy with with its audience.

Middle East protests: Signs of hope, challenge for fledgling democracies

The amplification of extreme voices is one consequence of budding democracies in the Middle East, but citizens insist that those voices remain on the fringe.

The Libyan public's backlash this weekend against a militant group blamed for killing Amb. J. Christopher Stevens underscores that the violent hatred unleashed by an anti-Islam film is supported by only a tiny fraction of Islam's more than 1.5 billion adherents.?But as Arabs strive to establish new governments in the wake of the 2011 uprisings, those minorities pose challenges far beyond their size ? not only for their governments, but for US policy.

After decades of promoting democracy, the US is getting an early glimpse of what free societies will look like in the Middle East ? and the kind of views that may be expressed. The opening up of public life has allowed for the airing of deep anti-American sentiment, built up over decades of US support for Israel and dictatorial Arab governments. It has also empowered the voice of long-repressed Islamist groups, some of whom were voted into power.

Most citizens in the region would likely agree that the anti-Islam film "Innocence of Muslims" should be banned. But they also say that the recent violence against US targets does not reflect broader public sentiment. And many are optimistic about democracy's possibilities, even if their priorities ultimately are different from those of Western societies.

But Israel, a key American partner in the region, argues that this upsurge of free expression is anything but democratic. It has been vocal in its criticism of Washington as naive about democratic development ? and the challenge posed by rising Islamist powers, especially hard-line factions.

"The radicals are a minority, but that's also the case with the terrorists?. You cannot ignore them," says Eli Shaked, former Israeli ambassador to Egypt. "Washington should stop expecting the Arabs to become democratic tomorrow or the day after tomorrow or in the near future. It's impossible. Democracy should come after a long process of democratization that should start in schools, in textbooks." Children should grow up learning the values" that are second nature in Western societies, he says.

Coping with power vacuums?

Libya was the scene of the worst violence,?but it was also the Arab country that arguably moved fastest to condemn it. Three days after the Sept. 11 attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which killed US Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three colleagues, as Muslims elsewhere launched fresh attacks, Libyans had already begun marching in rejection of the violence, telling Americans that ? in the words of one placard ? "We are sorry." On Sept. 21, thousands protested once again and attacked the compound of Ansar al-Sharia, a militant Islamist group that some have accused of killing Ambassador Stevens.?

Libya's fledgling government has vowed to hunt down the perpetrators of the Benghazi attack, which some officials said was preplanned by a militant group, not simply a protest that escalated. But the lack of a strong, unified national security force raises questions about how easy that will be.

Breaking news on breast cancer ? Feminist Philosophers

One of the most frightening facts of breast cancer is that two people may have the same diagnosis at the same stage, get the same treatment and then have remarkably different outcomes. One consequence of this is that while there is a lot of talk about cures for breast cancer, many women regard the diagnosis as a conditional death sentence.

An article published today online in Nature looks as though it will give us the tools to understand why outcomes vary and what different treatments can help those headed toward a worse outcome. The findings seem also to be well explained in the New York Times.

Two other types of breast cancer, accounting for most cases of the disease, arise from the luminal cells that line milk ducts. These cancers have proteins on their surfaces that grab estrogen, fueling their growth. Just about everyone with estrogen-fueled cancer gets the same treatment. Some do well. Others do not.

The genetic analysis divided luminal cancers into two distinct subtypes. The luminal A subtype had good prognoses while luminal B did not, suggesting that perhaps patients with luminal A tumors might do well with just hormonal therapy to block estrogen from spurring their cancers while luminal B patients might do better with chemotherapy in addition to hormonal therapy.

In some cases, genetic aberrations were so strongly associated with one or the other luminal subtype that they appeared to be the actual cause of the cancer, said Dr. Charles Perou of the University of North Carolina, who is the lead author of the study. And he called that ?a stunning finding.?

?We are really getting at the roots of these cancers,? he said.

It looks as though there are going to have to be clinical trials, but there are a number of breast cancer types with discouraging statistics, and now we can hope those can be much more effectively treated soon. As far as I can see, these include ones for which some women have prophylactic mastectomies, since if you carry the gene for them having your breasts removed may be the best option.

Verizon iPhone 5 Has 'Secret' Feature: It's 'Unlocked'

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Verizon version of the iPhone 5, which went on sale Friday, comes with a secret and unexpected feature: it works on AT&T's network as well.

Confirming blog reports, The Associated Press found that the Verizon iPhone 5 accepts an AT&T "SIM card" ? a little chip that identifies a phone to a wireless network. The phone can then be active on AT&T's network.

It's the first time Verizon iPhones have been able to access AT&T's network without complicated hacking procedures. The feature may mean little to most buyers, since they're signing up for two years of Verizon service. But it does give them the option of switching carriers.

It's unclear whether the feature is intended and whether the phones will work with other carriers, such as T-Mobile USA.

It's unclear whether the feature is intended and whether the phones will work with other carriers, such as T-Mobile USA. But Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney confirmed Saturday that the iPhone 5 models it's selling are "unlocked."

Last year, the first shipments of the Sprint iPhone 4S were unlocked and worked on AT&T, but Sprint later issued software updates that turned off that capability.

The RI GOP has a cohort of Ron Paul supporters

Who knew? There?s a bigger-than-expected element of Ron Paul supporters among current GOP candidates in Rhode Island.

I found that out from Providence Republican activist Dave Talan?s informative e-newsletter:

Many of us were impressed by the strong organization put together by R.I. Ron Paul supporters during the Presidential primary, which resulted in them winning a quarter of the R.I. Delegates to the GOP national convention.? The R.I. GOP has welcomed them to remain involved with our Party.? And at least 11 of them are now running for local office (State Legislature, or City or Town Council), many of them for the first time.? These 11 activists are:

MIKE DONAHUE? -? House 68? (Bristol & Warren)
CHRIS CHIRINO? -? House 11? (Providence)
DAVID BIBEAULT? -? House 53? (Smithfield, Glocester)
SEN. NICK KETTLE? -? Senate 21? (Coventry, Foster, Scituate)
MIKE ROLLINS? -? Senate 4? (North Providence, Providence)
RUSS HRYZAN? -? Senate 6? (Providence)
ROBERT MATTEO? -? Johnston Town Council Ward 4
ANDREW McNULTY? -? South Kingstown Town Council
CATHARINE MARIE LEACH? -? Warwick City Council Ward 6
GARY TROTT? -? West Warwick Town Council Ward 2
ALICE LOSASSO? -? West Warwick Town Council Ward 3

So, does this speak to an independent-minded streak among these Republicans, or is it another wrinkle for a party long riven by conservative and moderate factions?

0 Comments - Four Seasons Hotels and Resort

Ethan and Cameron?s eyes are as wide as saucers. The doors to the (complimentary) Kids For All Seasons* club in Langkawi have been thrown open, and in front of them are the makings of little boys? dreams: video games of every persuasion. Craft tables filled with possibility. Staff ready to play any game?for hours on end. It?s no wonder they barely said good-bye to us when they flew out of our room after a late breakfast.

It?s true that Four Seasons Resort Langkawi, Malaysia has plenty to offer. As a family, we toured the mangroves, shared an evening picnic under the stars I won?t soon forget and spent hours together just lazing around and being close.

But for a good hour or two? or three? every day, the boys?Ethan, nine, and Cameron, seven?disappeared. ?Going to the kids club, ma!? they?d yell as they bounded out the door and across the sand. And inevitably, we?d get a call from staff a within half an hour with the message that the boys wanted to stay longer. Was it ok? It was.

Kids? clubs come in all stripes. There are the ones that avoid any sort of 21st century video game play. There are the ones that give kids only that. What this kids? club did?and why I think the boys enjoyed it so much?was offer a little bit of everything, with a dedicated staff who was genuinely happy to engage. The boys were all smiles when they headed out, and all smiles when they came home. And when the kids are happy, parents are happy.

The club is free to all guests, so cost is never an issue. It gave Ish and I some time to ourselves?a rarity on our around-the-world trip. It gave the boys a feeling of independence and accomplishment: to be able to go on their own, stay as they liked, order their own snacks and play all day. We grew to trust the staff, who called to check when the kids begged to stay longer, let us know what to expect and where to find them on the property throughout the day.

Although it was all fun and games, there was a lot of learning, too. The boys came back knowing a few phrases in Malay, or the Bahasa Melayu language. They made batik paintings that will hang on their walls back home. They had fun playing everything from Lego video games with willing playmates to making a holiday scrapbook.

And with some of their little boy energy spent at the club, they?d come home to parents who were ready to hang out, distraction-free, as a family. Vacation Success.

*Kids For All Seasons (KFAS) is a Four Seasons complimentary recreational and educational program for children of resort guests. Most KFAS clubs are designed for youth four to 12 years old, and open daily from 9 to 5. (Younger children can often join KFAS with a nanny or parent, or resorts can arrange for babysitting.) But details vary from property to property, so check the resort?s website for more information.?

Kids can go all day or just for an hour or two. Activities inside and out include games, sports, music, treasure hunts, swimming, arts and crafts, cultural education, environmental preservation work and yoga. Not your average camp, the VIP offerings are pretty extraordinary?for example, at Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, kids can help the resort?s marine biologist graft coral in the lagoon sanctuary.

Story Updated: Sep 21, 2012 at 11:03 PM ECT

Brittany Marquez finished another impressive round of golf at the Northeastern State University's Golf Classic in Oklahoma with a level par 72 to win the Medallist honours and lead her team to a third place overall finish.

Marquez led the tournament after day one with a solid one under par 71, just one stroke ahead of Whitney McAteer and Kelsey Kirkpatrick, both of hosts, Northeastern State. On day two, Marquez continued to par hole after hole and shot an ever par 72 on Tuesday to win the event by four strokes over Northeastern State's McCandren Lewis.

It was the second career victory as a Lady Bison at Harding University for Marquez, who also won the 2012 Mulerider Classic in Texarkana, Texas last season.

Marquez was a member of the successful Trinidad and Tobago Ladies team who won the George Teale Trophy at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships this past August, along with teammates Kelsey Lou Hing and Monifa Sealy. All three ladies play Collegiate golf and were honoured after the 2011/2012 season as All Conference Champions in their respective Conferences.
