Computer Science Classic: The C Programming Language

Jul 18 2012

The C Programming Language by Brian W. Kernighan & Dennis M. Ritchie

The C Programming Language 2nd ed.

Originally published in 1978, The C Programming Language was the first widely used book on C, a language developed by Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs. The 1988 second edition was written to include standard ANSI C and is still in use today. It has sold millions of copies, been cited thousands of times, and translated into 25 languages. It is so popular that it is often referred to simply as K&R, shorthand for Kernighan & Ritchie, the authors of the book.

Reviews:

  • ?C has a been an amazingly successful and long-lasting programming language, largely due to the elegance and beauty of this text.? ? Douglas Reeves, Professor of Computer Science, NC State University
  • ?This book is one of the first and best books on one of the world?s most widespread and influential programming languages ? C. A classic for sure!? ? Srinath Krishna Ananthakrishnan, Graduate Student, Department of Computer Science, NC State University
  • ?This book has served as the definitive reference for the world?s most popular programming language since it?s first edition was published nearly 35 years ago.? ? Aaron Massey, Graduate Student, Department of Computer Science, NC State University
  • ?Kernighan and Ritchie are legends in the field of Computer Science. They are the creators of C. This book comes directly from them. The fact that it hasn?t needed a revision since 1988 and still is a de facto standard for learning C says a lot about the book. It is the most precise yet complete book ever written about C. Not only does it explain the syntax of the C language, but also gives a peek into how stuff works under the hood. Recommended for everyone wanting to learn C!? ? Jitesh Shah, Graduate Student, Department of Computer Science, NC State University
  • ?This is hands-down the best book for those who like to master the C programming language. Every one of the best C programmers that I know recommend this book even today.? ? Ramesh Natarajan, ?10 Classic UNIX and C Programming Books to Enrich Your Library,? The Geek Stuff
