Interview with Cheryl Reynolds, CEO of SODA Inc, Hamilton's ...

I?m on a mission to establish a Business Incubator in Tauranga next year.

Part 1 of this mission is to learn from people who have already succeeded.

So last week I spent an amazing, inspiring, uplifting 3 hours with Cheryl Reynolds the CEO of SODA Inc and Rachel Wark, the Communications Manager (thanks for making so much time for me guys!).

As a bonus I brought my good friend Alistair McMahon?with me who shares my passion for start-ups and marketing.

Wow. What an incubator. They have achieved so much in just 3 short years and 3 days (their birthday was last Monday).

Here are my notes about SODA Inc.

What is SODA Inc?

  • SODA Inc is a fusion of incubator/accelerator + cluster
  • The cluster is a fusion of StartUps and Existing Industry
  • Lesson for me: I think that sometimes existing industry can see StartUp?s as nimble, agile threat?s that are determined to steal business from them, so I love to see that SODA is working at bridging the gap between startups and existing industry and pointing out the opportunity for both

Empowering story?s everywhere

  • The SODA Inc identity is fused to the building and it?s rich history as a soda bottling plant in the 1900
  • Each company which has been carefully selected to be included in the incubator has a story: a history, a present, and a future
  • One tenant of note is Alistair Grigg, COO of Xero. Alastair oversees all aspects of Xero product development and service delivery, from design to customer support, but from Hamilton where he chooses to live with his family. How 2012 is that??
  • Lesson for me: Make sure I have a story to tell. People love stories, they identify with stories, they believe stories.

There is a empowered women component:

  • It starts with in the 1870?s when?Mary Jane Innes?seized?control of the brewery business, from her inept husband and made it a roaring success
  • Cheryl herself her started planning SODA 8 years ago and now runs it
  • And now Rachel Wark as the communication?s manager
  • Many of the incubated businesses are either women run and women led
  • Lesson for me: About damn time. Hooray for the end of the male dominated business sector

A beautifully designed and modern space

  • The design of the space is a fusion of open plan but partitions/cubicles to provide a workspace you can call your own
  • No doors, but doorways for a distinct feeling of?territory?(good for minimising distractions)
  • Lesson for me: The ?wow? factor is so important. It?s essential to create a space that has form and function and design so the residents feel good, but also it needs to impress the daily visitors

It?s hard to get in. It?s harder to stay in

  • Cheryl: ?We are not for profit, not for loss?
  • The entry criteria is very strict, and must be so. All incubated companies must have exceptional stories, exceptional growth potential, and with a global expansion focus
  • If an incubated company doesn?t double it?s key metric every 6 months they are out
  • Lesson for me: I love that! It keeps the residents motivated to push forward and the SODA team/mentors to push forward too?

Who funded it to get it off the ground?

  • Once the company was formed, the Hamilton Council donated the space
  • Wintec provided initial funding for the fit out
  • NZTE approached SODA and now the programmes are NZTE accredited
  • Lesson for me: An interesting hybrid between public funding grants and?private?investment

Opened in 2009 but when did the work really begin?

  • pre-2004: Cheryl?s series of successes, failures and exits
  • 2004: Cheryl started planning SODA
  • 2008: Board formed and corporate sponsors in
  • 2009: Open for business
  • Lesson for me: The public only sees the 3 year history when the doors opened, but so much work had to happen to lead up to that point

Building an ecosystem

  • SODA is growing not just a StartUp ecosystem for Hamilton, but for New Zealand.
  • Alongside it?s day to day activities they have a number of?initiatives?in place that don?t directly contribute to their own key metrics but are happening because they contribute to?strengthening?and growing the eco-system
  • One such?initiative?is ?SODA Labs?: The CEO?s of 3 external, well established companies (plus 1 wildcard from the incubator) are invited into the room for 90 mins. Often those CEO?s walk out with a long standing competitive dispute resolved or a joint venture. SODA provides the neutral venue
  • Lesson for me: I love the idea of building an ecosystem that benefits everyone

What?s Next?

Video: Conn. coast evacuates; power outages expected

>>> mayor bloomberg has evacuated the low-lying areas of manhattan island . more on that in a couple of minutes. to our east in connecticut they are braced for possible historic flooding. as you saw a moment ago, a storm surge of 6 to 11 feet along some parts of the connecticut coastline. nbc's katy tur is in mystic. good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning, matt. that's certainly the big concern. we were out here last night, and the wind wasn't so steady. there were wind gusts. the winds have gotten steadier as the morning has gone on. stronger gusts coming here and there. but the big concern isn't necessarily the rain. it hasn't started raining here. there won't be a lot of rain up here. the rain will be down to the south. here what they are really concerned about is the storm surge . this is the long island sound. it's already come up about 10 feet since we get here about an hour and a half ago this morning. it's expected to come up a lot farther. it will come up totally on this shore and be significantly higher on the coastal areas. that is the major concern here, the flooding. the governor in a press conference yesterday said that he thinks that this is going to be the worst threat to human life that they have seen in this state in years. that sounds very dramatic, but it isn't so when you think about what irene did to connecticut last year. irene , many people in new york and new jersey rolled their eyes at it and said it wasn't a very big deal . here in connecticut it was a very big deal . here in fairfield there were houses with not just broken windows , houses knocked off foundation and thrown into the water. they expect this to be even worse , the storm surge to be even worse here than it was during irene . so that's the major concern. there's the mandatory evacuations up and down the connecticut coast. the good news is that most people are heeding those evacuation orders. the other big concern is power outages. all the wind they are expecting to get up here, because the wind is going to be very strong up on the northern edge of this storm. the wind will cause a lot of power outages along with that flooding. they expect -- connecticut light and power expect as many as 600,000 people to be without power here in connecticut for days on end. during irene they were without power for days on end as well so everybody in connecticut is expecting the worst and heeding the orders and just trying to prepare for t.matt?

>> all right. katy tur in mystic, connecticut . thanks. connecticut 's governor

'Back to the Future' star fears storm took home

By Michael Maloney, TODAY contributor

Mark Davis / Getty Images

"Back to the Future" star Lea Thompson may have been at the "Dancing With the Stars" taping on Monday, but her mind was on Superstorm Sandy. The actress, who currently stars on ABC Family's "Switched at Birth," had every reason to believe her home on Fire Island, N.Y., had been ravaged ? and likely lost. The storm's surge had destroyed homes and property in the beach community Monday.

Surprisingly, Thompson was not only calm about the situation, she also appeared her usual, exuberant self. How come?

?Well, because it?s hilarious,? she told TODAY. ?My husband just paid off a 30-year mortgage in September. I thought this would be just perfect if the house is completely gone!?

The good news is that the actress, who played Marty McFly?s mother and his girlfriend in the "Back to the Future" franchise, has flood insurance. The bad news? ?You really don?t get that much,? Thompson noted. ?It?s sad. I?m mourning my little house on Fire Island.?

Thompson, who was at "DWTS" to cheer on "Switched at Birth" co-star Gilles Marini, is hoping to make a trip back East next week to survey the damage. ?I just know that it was completely flooded. It?s just surreal. My kids grew up there.?

Despite the potential personal loss, the actress is keeping things in perspective. ?

?The good news is that no one is there and there have been such great storm warnings," she said. "They evacuated everyone from the island. I hope everyone is safe.?

Apartment vacancy rate hits 12-year low | Inside Real Estate News

The apartment vacancy rate in the Denver metro area fell to 4.3 percent in the third quarter, ?dropping to the lowest vacancy rate recorded in any quarter in a dozen years, according to a report released today by the Apartment Association of Metro Denver and the Colorado Division of Realty.

The last time the vacancy rate was lower was in the third quarter of 2000, when it stood at 3.7 percent. At that time, the average monthly rental rate was $722, or about $970 in inflation-adjusted dollars, which is not much higher than today?s average rental rate of $986.

The apartment vacancy rate was down from 2011?s third-quarter rate of 4.9 percent, and was also down from this year?s second quarter rate of 4.8 percent.

For the past 12 quarters, the vacancy rate has fallen when compared to the same quarter one year earlier. The last time the quarterly vacancy rate rose year over year was during the third quarter of 2009.

From the third quarter of 2011 to the same period of 2012, the vacancy rate dropped in Adams, Arapahoe, and Jefferson counties, and in the Boulder/Broomfield area. The vacancy rate rose in Douglas County and was flat in Denver County during the same period.

?Considering that we were already under five-percent vacancy, this additional drop is significant,? said Ron Throupe, professor of Real Estate at the Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management at the University of Denver, the report?s author. ?Rent growth hit an 11-year high during the second quarter, but there is still enough demand out there to keep filling up units.?

As vacancy rates moved down, the area?s average rent increased. During the third quarter of 2012, the average monthly rent of $986 ?in metro Denver is up ?5.2 percent, or $49, from last year?s third-quarter average rent of $936.

The average rent rose in all counties measured except Adams County, with the largest increases found in Arapahoe County in the Boulder/Broomfield area where the average rents grew year over year by 7.1 percent and 8.1 percent, respectively. The county areas with the highest average rents were Douglas County and the Boulder/Broomfield area where the average rents were $1,140 and $1,115, respectively. Adams County reported the lowest average rent at $893.

?The average rent has grown year over year in every quarter for the past two and a half years, and it has recently begun to accelerate,? said Ryan McMaken a spokesman for the Colorado Division of Housing. ?The rent growth we?re now seeing is starting to look like what we experienced in the days of the dot-com boom.?

This year?s third-quarter vacancy rates by county were:

  • Adams, 4.2 percent.
  • Arapahoe, 4.8 percent.
  • Boulder/Broomfield, 2.9 percent.
  • Denver, 4.3 percent.
  • Douglas, 4.1 percent.
  • Jefferson, 3.7 percent.

Average rents for all counties were:

  • Adams, $893.
  • Arapahoe, $956.
  • Boulder/Broomfield, $1115.
  • Denver, $1015.
  • Douglas, $1140
  • Jefferson, $949.

The Vacancy and Rent Surveys are a service provided by the Apartment Association of Metro Denver and the Colorado Department of Local Affairs? Division of Housing to renters and the multi-family housing industry on a quarterly basis. The Colorado Vacancy and Rent Survey reports averages and, as a result, there are often differences in rental and vacancy rates by size, location, age of building, and apartment type. The full report is available through the Apartment Association of Metro Denver? and limited information is available online at the Colorado Division of Housing.

Android 4.2: Still Jelly Bean, but sweeter

7 hrs.

Along with a small mountain of new Nexus devices, Google announced also?Android 4.2 on Monday. It's still called Jelly Bean, just like the prior version, but it's made just a little bit sweeter by the addition of new?features such as Photo Sphere, Gesture Typing, multi-user support and more.

Photo Sphere
Like iOS, Android now has a baked-in tool that'll help you create panoramic images.?In Android 4.2, you can take photos in any direction???an?improvement?on the panorama feature in iOS 6???and?they'll be put together into "photo spheres," which allow someone to explore the images you took as a 360-degree environment. (If you've ever used Microsoft's?Photosynth app, it sounds a lot like that.)

Gesture Typing
Plenty of third-party keyboards, such as Swype, offer users the ability to type by dragging their fingers across the on-screen keyboard, and now this feature's built right into Android.?Additionally, the new keyboard will "anticipate and predict the next word" you intend on typing so that you can simply select suggested words without even needing to type.

Multi-user support on tablets
Sharing an Android tablet with a family member will be significantly less awkward thanks to multi-user support. Each user can have his or her own homescreen, background, widgets, apps and?games. Toggling between users is supposedly as easy as switching between apps.

Wireless Display
Android 4.2 has a Wireless Display feature, similar to Apple's AirPlay, which allows you to share movies, YouTube clips, and whatever else might be on your screen to an HDTV. You'll just need to attach a little adapter to any HDMI-enabled TV and you're set to mirror content.

Daydream
Daydream is described as something that allows your Android device to "display useful and delightful information when idle or docked." It sounds like a snazzy screensaver, basically.

Souped-up notifications
Swiping down on your Android device reveals the notification pane. And now you can instantly take an action directly from that spot. This means that if you spot a missed call, you'll also see a button allowing you to return it.

When do I get this?
No word as to when Android 4.2 will become available for various Android devices, but we do know that the new Nexus lineup, which ships on Nov. 13, will be pre-loaded with the latest version of Jelly Bean.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Business and Financial News: Why Reporters Don't Have a Clue ...

The news sure isn't what it used to be, in fact, I am even amazed at some of the stuff that I hear on the TV Financial news, as commentators give it their best guess on potential solutions to solve the economic crisis. All these notions about too big to fail, nationalizing banks and having the government decide who gets paid how much is just a lot of hot air.

Indeed, I feel embarrassed for some of the news reporters as they misspeak on issues surrounding capitalism. You know, maybe we ought to tell our news reporters that they cannot comment on business matters unless they had once run a business? I mean anyone can get a nice haircut, nice suit and smile for the camera with a little make-up and a complete make-over. Heck, why is it that anyone who can read a teleprompter is assumed to know what he's talking about, come on already.

We live in the most powerful and greatest nation on Earth, it is by far and away the most awesome country ever created in human history. Why you ask? Simple, one word actually, it's called; Capitalism. And it's just amazing that no one gets it. Maybe a re-read of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is in order for all those news commentators and newspaper reporters who love to take a jab or make a persnickety comment in their otherwise shallow news stories.

And why is it that the editors of these TV News programs, newspapers and radio segments allow this nonsense to be played on the air, why It's pure opinion and it's not based on anything. Socialism doesn't work, communism is a dead end (literally) and we've proven capitalism pushes people, society and civilization up. Next time you hear someone on TV or read an article in the newspaper trashing capitalism, consider the source. There is someone who has never once had to make a payroll.

US Navy tests first 11-meter missile-firing sea drone (video)

US Navy tests first 11meter missilefiring sea drone video

Advances in unmanned military tools and vehicles have come on leaps and bounds, but, until now, we haven't seen a weapon firing drone operating in the seas. A recent test taking part offshore near Maryland saw several missiles launched from a new remote-controlled inflatable-hulled ship. While the Navy has used drones before for mine clearing and other defensive tasks, the small boat (similar to that pictured above) is the first experiment to involve true offensive capabilities. The almost zodiac-like craft has been an ongoing project over recent years, and contains a fully automated system which the Navy calls a "Precision Engagement Module" which uses an Mk-49 mounting with a dual missile launcher manufactured by Rafael. The hope is that such vehicles could patrol the coastline, or serve as a first defense against pirates, and other such small, fast-moving seafaring dangers. If you want to catch it in action, head past the break for the video, but don't be fooled. While it might look like a series of misses, the Navy claims this is just a trick of the camera angle, with all six missiles apparently making contact.

Help Your Business Succeed By Become A ... - SEO Internet Marketing

When you were developing your website, you might have heard about the importance of search engine rankings to a website?s success. This article contains ideas on how you can increase your search engine rankings.

Before starting, you need to have a good understanding of SEO. It would preferable for real people to review websites and choose which ones should rank first. However, since there are millions of websites, computers have to take on the job using equations and algorithms to rank the websites. The point of SEO is to make your site rank higher in the search results by building certain concepts into the design of your site to use these equations to your advantage.

Several elements are utilized by search engines to rank your site. Keywords in your content and titles are analyzed for relevancy. They may also rank your site based on activity levels, inbound links and outbound links.

As with so many things, inching your way up in search rankings is a process that occurs over time. Keep this in mind as you identify each and every opportunity to optimize your site, and make it more visible to search engines. For example, use content that has a good keyword density, including titles and sub-titles as well as the main text.

Purchasing higher rankings on search engines is not reasonable for most. You may pay to be a featured or sponsored result, however some people are cautious about these results and may not click them. A lot of people do not click on these results. Because it is an expensive marketing method, sponsored or featured sites are usually utilized by large companies or corporations.

Linking in regards to your site is a wonderful way to increase your site ranking. Also, try to link within your own site and to external sites. Find sites with similar customer bases as your own, and try to make some sort of link arrangement.

Targeted visitors are people who you want to visit your website because they will be interested in your product or service. While every website receives random visitors, it is your target market that is the most important for producing business. If your visitors do not fit with what you are selling, they will not feel compelled to purchase your product. In order to get the visitors that you want, you need to use phrases that they are likely to type into a search engine.

Every good business needs a well-developed website. If sales are an important part of your business, or you rely on client acquisition via the internet, then a website becomes even more crucial. Use the tips from this article to help you optimize your site.

How You Can Market Your Business Online Successfully | SEO ...

One of the most profitable occupations is Internet marketing. However, it must be done properly. The business opportunities that exist online are practically endless, but all have a common requirement of needing personal time invested. Since there are only so many hours in the day, the wise use of them is important. This article will give you a lot of advice on how to use your time in the best way when marketing your business.

Your marketing efforts can benefit from setting up a database for customer relationship management. It can help you see past successes and guide you in the ways that your business and marketing strategies should be going. Get in touch with your best customers; send them more shopping suggestions, coupons, limited offers and free samples.

Let customers be able to write ratings on your products and enable them the option to explain why these ratings were chosen. Having this sort of feedback on your page can not only give you ideas on how to improve your product or service, but also gives customers an overview of what they can expect from the product.

You need to figure what content would attract your target market to your site. Once you know who you are targeting, it should be easy for you to find the content that will entice them to visit your site over and over again.

Although it is good to have many social network profiles, make sure to give each one sufficient attention. A profile which is stagnant is perceived as spam.

Place keywords in your internal links. Once you get a visitor to your site, keeping them there becomes vital. If you use links to direct them to previous posts or other relevant information elsewhere on the site, you can keep them around much longer. Links can not only generate traffic, but can keep people interested in your products and services.

You should back up every claim you make about your niche. Be believable in your claims and try to demonstrate the benefits of what you are promoting with a video, so that customers can see for themselves. Make a video of yourself demonstrating your products or performing the services you advertise to convince your audience.

Provide a money back guarantee as part and parcel of any Internet marketing strategy that you use. Your customers will feel more confident about doing business with you when you offer such a guarantee. Customers will be more likely to trust you if you take all the risk out of their purchases.

As shown, Internet marketing should not overreach your available time. Strategize your approach, use your time efficiently and you will see success!

Romney calls for more cooperation in Washington

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is calling for more partisan cooperation in Washington as he rallies supporters in Florida.

Romney says this is not a time to divide the country or demonize political opponents, but to, quote, "build bridges" to the other party.

The comments came before thousands of supporters who packed the Pensacola Civic Center. It's the first of three stops Romney planned for Florida Saturday.

Romney's been toning down conservative rhetoric as he courts women and independents as Election Day looms.

But the moderate tone did not last long.

Romney said that Obama is "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" by focusing on "small things." He also said that the president has shrunk from the promises he made as a candidate.

The Best and Worst Kids' Fast Food Meals | Men's Health News

Boy eating fast food

Easy on the Mickey D's, buddy.

Your own health is in jeopardy when your stress levels are high, but a new survey shows that stressed parents are more likely to put their child?s health in danger, too. When researchers analyzed the data from 2,100 parents, they found that moms and dads who are stressed are more likely to have children who are obese.

The analysis also found that parents who perceived themselves to be stressed fed their children more fast food. Being too busy to cook a homemade meal?or too focused on your work to pay attention to what your kids are eating?can cause frequent visits to the drive-through. Heed our advice on how to Beat Stress Wherever It?s Hiding.

What?s a dad to do? You know the obvious: eat in more. But we know sometimes that?s a lot to ask, so we?ve gathered some of the worst kids menu items at 5 popular restaurants and provided just as tasty?but significantly healthier?alternatives for your kids.

Cheesecake Factory

NOT THAT!

Kid?s Pasta with Alfredo Sauce
1,810 calories
696 mg sodium

CALORIE EQUIVALENT: 775 Parmesan-flavored Pepperidge Farm Goldfish?that?s two bags!

Alfredo sauce is never a good idea, but the Cheesecake Factory manages to fit more calories onto this pint-sized plate than what?s found in most restaurants? adult-sized portions of fettuccine Alfredo. More disturbing though, is the total fat tally?this constitutes two days? worth of the very maximum amount a child eating 1,600 calories a day ought to consume, just in one meal!

EAT THIS!
Kid?s Pasta with Marinara Sauce
490 calories
515 mg sodium

Many times restaurants will stick you with a severe sodium load to compensate for fewer calories. Fortunately, in a rare, commendable move, the Cheesecake Factory keeps the sodium stable while cutting the calories significantly. Plus, the marinara sauce boasts high levels of lycopene, an antioxidant compound that may bolster your kid against a whole range of maladies down the road. (Find more smart restaurant swaps in Eat This, Not That!)

On the Border

NOT THAT!

Kid?s Cheese Quesadilla with Mexican Rice
1,120 calories
1,690 mg sodium

CALORIE EQUIVALENT: 14 El Monterey Steak Taquitos

Not only is this kid?s meal doused in grease, but between the tortilla and the rice, it packs an astonishing 78 grams of carbohydrates. In short, you?re providing your kid with almost 75 percent of her calories for the day, but shorting him nutritionally?the quick-burning, cheap carbs will leave him hungry again in no time.

EAT THIS!
Kid?s Mexican Plate with Crispy Chicken Taco
260 calories
540 mg sodium

This powerhouse plate packs a full 17 grams of protein, which will keep your child energized and feeling full for longer. The key is skipping the starchy side of rice (if he?s hungry enough, opt for beans instead) and eschewing the heaps of free chips on the table.

KFC

NOT THAT!

Popcorn Chicken Kids Portion, Potato Wedges, and Pepsi (16 fl. oz)
730 calories
1,535 mg sodium

CALORIE EQUIVALENT: More than seven Eggo Chocolate Chip Waffles!

The stats for this meal read like a rap sheet of fried chicken?s nutritional offenses. The total fat is high?32 grams?as are the carbohydrates, with 96 grams. Factor in the high sodium, and it becomes clear why this cuisine bears the expression, ?Heart attack on a plate.? (See the other Worst Chicken Dishes in America.)

EAT THIS!
Grilled Chicken Drumstick, Mashed Potatoes (no gravy), and Capri Sun Roarin? Waters Tropical Fruit Juice Drink
210 calories
625 mg sodium

Though this drumstick is grilled, KFC leaves the skin on for a crispy, flavorful crust. And unlike the popcorn chicken, which is largely spackled in thick, starchy batter, the bulk of the chicken here is actual meat?15 grams? worth of protein. (

McDonald?s

NOT THAT!

Mighty Kids Meal with Double Cheeseburger, Fries, Apple Slices and Fat Free Chocolate Milk Jug
770 calories
1,190 mg sodium

CALORIE EQUIVALENT: 17 slices of Kraft Singles 2% American cheese?more than an entire package!

McDonald?s features pretty decent Happy Meals, but watch out for the Mighty Kids menu. In theory, an intermediate meal for older kids is great, but it raises the inevitable issue of not-yet-quite-mighty-enough younger kids wanting to prematurely supersize their order. And given that this ?kids? meal is atrocious enough by adult standards, no child has any business consuming this many calories in one sitting.

EAT THIS!
Happy Meal with Hamburger, Apple Slices, and Apple Juice Box
360 calories
510 mg sodium

Make this your child?s go-to meal for when you?re on the go. He?ll rack up protein from the burger and fiber from the apple.

Chili?s

NOT THAT!
Pepper Pals? Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Pepper Pals? Side Cinnamon Apples
850 calories
54 g fat (16.5 saturated fat)
1,135 mg sodium

CALORIE EQUIVALENT: 24 Dunkin Donuts Cocoa Glazed Munchkins

A grilled cheese sandwich is a staple on the kids? menu, but Chili?s has managed to turn this simple meal into a high-calorie gut bomb. The cinnamon apples is the worst option for sides on the kids menu, racking up 270 calories and 11 grams of fat.

EAT THIS!
Pepper Pals? Cheese Quesadilla with Pepper Pals? Side Pineapple
405 calories
21 g fat (14 saturated fat)
710 mg sodium

Your kid will still get his fix of bread, cheese, and fruit in this meal but with less than half the calories and fat, and a fraction of the sodium. Keep it simple with a side of pineapple?it?s sweet and juicy and only 35 calories. (Want to know the secret to dropping serious pounds? Just learn The Truth About Calories.)

Charlie Sheen Returns to TV in FX's 'Anger Management' | Self ...

Memory (William Wordsworth)

A pen--to register; a key--
That winds through secret wards
Are well assigned to Memory
By allegoric Bards.

As aptly, also, might be given
A Pencil to her hand;
That, softening objects, sometimes even
Outstrips the heart's demand;

That smooths foregone distress, the lines
Of lingering care subdues,
Long-vanished happiness refines,
And clothes in brighter hues;

Yet, like a tool of Fancy, works
Those Spectres to dilate
That startle Conscience, as she lurks
Within her lonely seat.

Oh! that our lives, which flee so fast,
In purity were such,
That not an image of the past
Should fear that pencil's touch!

Retirement then might hourly look
Upon a soothing scene,
Age steal to his allotted nook
Contented and serene;

With heart as calm as lakes that sleep,
In frosty moonlight glistening;
Or mountain rivers, where they creep
Along a channel smooth and deep,
To their own far-off murmurs listening.

Obama, Romney campaign with eye on storm forecast

(AP) ? With an eye on the weather forecast, President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are starting a 10-day sprint to the finish line in a contest increasingly about momentum versus math.

"Let's win this," Romney emailed supporters Saturday as he hopped a plane from one important state to another ? Ohio to Florida."

"We're defying odds and holding strong," he told his backers, and urged them to contribute more money to help Republicans keep up the fight.

His running mate, Paul Ryan, was out early in rainy, chilly Ohio to visit a factory in New Philadelphia, where he told voters, "You know it's you. You know what you have in front of you. You know your responsibility."

A huge storm barreling toward the East Coast and some battleground states had both campaigns adjusting travel schedules and canceling events. Even at this late date in the campaign, neither side wanted to risk the appearance of putting politics ahead of public safety.

The president was pressing on with a campaign trip Saturday to New Hampshire.

But an email announcing that Vice President Joe Biden's Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., stated that the change was "being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm."

Romney canceled a rally in Virginia Beach that was planned for Sunday, and aides said they were also considering scrapping two other events elsewhere in the state. None of Obama's campaign stops had been canceled, but he did adjust his travel schedule slightly. The campaign moved up his planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm.

With the Nov. 6 election fast approaching, Obama and Romney are tied nationally. But the president still appears to have more pathways to reaching the required 270 electoral votes.

The Obama campaign released a new TV ad Saturday urging Americans when they go into the voting booth to consider Romney's plans to roll back Wall Street reforms, transform Medicare into a voucher-like system and reduce spending on education while at the same time cutting taxes for the rich. The spot will air in Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia, all key battleground states.

The Republican nominee is trying to seize the momentum mantle and turn a wave of GOP enthusiasm into an electoral victory.

Obama's campaign pressed forward with a get-out-the-vote effort that aides said had them leading or tied in every competitive state. The president was eschewing the lofty rhetoric of his 2008 run in favor of warning supporters that skipping out on voting could cost him the election.

"In 2000, Gore vs. Bush, 537 votes changed the direction of history in a profound way and the same thing could happen," Obama said in an interview Friday with MTV.

Romney was switching his attention to Florida on Saturday after spending much of the week focused on shoring up support in Ohio. While the Midwestern swing state could be crucial to Romney's re-election prospects, he also faces tremendous pressure to carry Florida, which offers 29 Electoral College votes, the most of any swing state.

Obama carried Florida by just 3 percentage points in 2008 and polls show the candidates tied.

The former Massachusetts governor was scheduled to attend three rallies, the first in Pensacola along the state's conservative Panhandle. He then moves to suburban Orlando before finishing his day with an evening rally just outside of Tampa, the site of the Republican National Convention. Romney was to be joined at all three events by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Ryan had his family in tow for the factory visit in New Philadelphia, and his 7-, 9- and 10-year-olds scampered between parts bins and heavy chains.

Ten-year-old Charlie waved the peace sign and mugged for cameras, prompting his mother, Janna Ryan, to shake her head and declare, "I don't know where he gets it. It's kind of crazy."

The program ? starting with some video sequences from the latest Heartland Climate Skeptics Conference in Chicago ? was largely criticized by Joe Bast of Heartland, Tom Harris of Canada, and some pre-program comments were mentioned by Chris Horner and The Heartland Institute. Gavin Schmidt posted the video on Real Climate, mostly to boast that he has appeared for a few seconds, too.

I think that a viewer will have no doubts that the creators of the program are hostile towards the skeptics ? due to the constant usage of offensive words such as "contrarians" and due to the hostile faces of the host (especially John Hockenberry), among a few other reasons. On the other hand, I think that this program has done a relatively fair and open job when it comes to the revelation of the information for the viewers, especially the information about the changes of the debate in recent years.

?

It seems to me that most of the viewers understood that the climate skeptics are damn reasonable, educated, and kind of nice people. There are many of them ? the number of "visible" climate skeptics among scientists isn't really lower than the number of "visible" climate alarmists.

While the program tried to claim otherwise, I guess that an intelligent viewer will understand that using a World War II analogy, the climate change controversy is like the war and the alarmists resemble the Axis powers while the skeptics are like the Allied forces. The Axis powers may be more tightly packed, they may demand a stricter discipline from themselves and from everyone else, and they may be spending more time by spreading the idea that their ultimate victory is inevitable. But even from their programs, an intelligent viewer must understand that the Allied forces are at least comparably powerful, they may be right, they seem to offer observations and arguments that are almost certainly right even now, they may already be winning battles, and they may soon celebrate the final victory in the war.

The idea that the Axis powers have some unbreakable superiority is a meme that just the most intellectually limited viewers may be eager to buy ? at least I hope so ? and I am kind of not afraid of it. I don't think it's too important what the people who can easily be brainwashed by a transparent propaganda think. What matters are the skeptical people who began to be somewhat interested in the issue, who understand other things, and who won't be fooled easily. And I am confident that this PBS program only helped those people to fall in love with the climate skeptics.

But the hostile tone towards climate skepticism notwithstanding, the program acknowledged that the bulk of America went pretty much skeptical in recent years. Surprisingly, it also acknowledged that Al Gore is a divisive asshole who helped the skeptics to strengthen even more. The viewers could hear some short "excerpts" from the skeptics who speak about the actual science ? although the scientific "technicality" were not the main focus of the documentary.

At some points, both alarmists and skeptics are saying things. And such segments often reminded me of the first Obama-Romney debate. For example, around 10:30, you may compare John Kerry and Myron Ebell. Kerry is subdued and seems to have developed bad conscience. He seems to admit a sequence of recent defeats and the non-existence of the actual consensus. Ebell speaks confidently, as a person whose words have already been pretty much established.

So I believe that this program, a mixture of an apparently prejudiced tone against the climate skeptics and some facts about the skeptics' victories, their decency, education, arguments, upward trend of their influence, and their rather large number as well as the subtle hints about the alarmists' dishonesty that may be seen in the program, despite the clear attempt to create a pro-alarmist program, will help America to become one additional little bit more skeptical again.

I would grade this program on the recent years in the climate debate: B. The biased language and the narrator's apparent bias penetrating the program is my only complaint.
