THE RACE: Both campaigns busy during weekend lull

In the short break between conventions, President Barack Obama and rival Mitt Romney are dashing around the country trying to make the most of the next few days.

Newly anointed Republican nominee Romney is angling to catch the crest of a hoped-for surge in the polls and Obama is ready to bask in the glow of his party's sendoff at next week's Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C.

Candidates can usually count on post-convention spikes in their approval ratings. And more often, challengers enjoy larger bumps than incumbents.

The spikes are often short lived, as John McCain and Sarah Palin found in 2008. But they're savored while they last.

"Tonight was their night," Obama tweeted shortly after midnight. "But our focus must be on tomorrow."

But Romney and ticket mate Paul Ryan worked to hold onto the focus on them, teaming up with their wives Friday for a lively airport rally in Tampa, Fla., before going their separate ways.

"We want to be held accountable for the promises we made last night," Romney said. "It's going to be an exciting ride," said Ann Romney.

They then headed for storm-drenched New Orleans while Ryan split off for Virginia in a separate campaign plane.

Obama was meeting with troops in Fort Bliss, Texas.

While the White House billed the president's trip as nonpolitical, Obama's campaign seemed likely to contrast the visit with Romney's failure to speak about U.S. forces in Afghanistan and Iraq in his acceptance speech. Obama campaigns Saturday in Iowa.

Democrats poked fun at actor-director Clint Eastwood's rambling convention conversation with an empty chair representing an imaginary Obama.

The Obama campaign tweeted a photo of the back of the president's Oval Office chair, with Obama's head peeking over it. "This seat's taken," was the caption.

Factors To Consider When Finding The Door Store That Fits - caskets

Factors To Consider When Finding The Door Store That Fits

If you are building or renovating your house, it is imperative that you identify The Door Stores that will offer the best doors that match your home design. There are many stores that supply doors and this makes it difficult to find the best door store. Moreover, there are several types of doors and different stores deal with different type of doors. For example there are stores that deal with wooden doors. Whilst others deal with glass, metal and steel doors. However, there are several elements that you can put into consideration in order to find the best door store in your local area. These elements include the following.

The first thing you should consider is whether The Door Store is an authorized supplier. There several companies that are reputed for producing the best doors. For that reason, you should contact these companies in order to get the list of all their accredited suppliers. This will help you shortlist some of the stores that supply topnotch door brands. Moreover, this will enable you to evaluate the store?s commitment to offer good quality products.

The popularity of The Door Store is also an important factor to consider. In order to get the store?s popularity you should ask for references from friends, colleagues or family members members who have been in the same situation. This is the best source of information due to the fact it is first hand and unbiased. This will help you identify the best and the worst door stores in the market. Furthermore, you can talk to an professional like a carpenter to give you a recommendation on the best door store. A home improvement store or a door store that has a good popularity is a clear sign that they are executing something right.

Cost is yet another factor that you should consider. You should compare the door prices of each store. It is imperative that you get a store that has affordable prices as per your fiscal strength. However, you should remember that cost goes hand in hand with good quality, usually the cheaper the door the poorer the good quality. For that reason, it is crucial to find The Door Store that strikes a balance in between cost and good quality. You should not let cost compromise all the other elements.

Finally, the last factor that you should consider is the right after sales services. This will require you to visit or call the stores in order to get their right after sale services which include transportation and set up. You can also get this information by visiting several store websites or review door stores websites. This will enable you to get the stores that offer extra services. This is very effective due to the fact it reduces the cost of transportation and set up. Moreover, if the doors get broken throughout transportation or set up you are not responsible for the expenses incurred. All these elements are equally important when researching for the best door store. In the eventuality that you have a busy schedule it is advisable to use the internet in your search. This is the most practical and time saving way of finding The Door Store that satisfies your home improvement needs.

With choreographed conventions, is something lost?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As Chris Christie's moment at the microphone neared, delegates to the Republican National Convention were atwitter at the chance to hear the New Jersey governor speak. After all, who knew what might happen? "He doesn't seem to have a filter," said David Shimkin, a delegate from New York.

But the famously freewheeling Christie did in fact have filters: He used a teleprompter, and he read from a speech that has been vetted and approved.

Americans hunger for authenticity ? or, at least, say that they do. The explosion of reality TV is testament to that desire for the unscripted moment (even if that unscripted moment is, well, scripted). So the slick choreography of the modern political convention, while understandable, also seems odd. And, some say, it's actually counterproductive to what the parties say they want to accomplish: generate passion that translates into votes.

"This regard for order, this insistence on order, it's just weird," says Richard Bensel, a professor of American politics at Cornell University.

It's that need to control the message and the messengers that led Texas Congressman Ron Paul to hold his own alternative rally Sunday in Tampa, Fla., drawing a crowd of thousands. "It's exactly what the Republican Party should have wanted ? real spirit, real emotion," Bensel says. "That enthusiasm shouldn't be offstage. It shouldn't be in an independent rally."

But it's the way things work these days. And Robert Lehrman, who was Vice President Al Gore's chief speech writer for three years, says that if he were GOP nominee Mitt Romney, he would insist on an orderly convention.

"You're trying to show a unified, strong party that represents your views," says Lehrman, author of the 2009 book "The Political Speechwriter's Companion." ''And to have those kinds of debates doesn't help the campaign."

"Used to be 30 years ago, you had platform fights, and they would come from the floor and be debated," he says. "Now, they had some platform stuff on CSPAN, where 30,000 people watch it. But 30 million people have no idea about those things."

In the 19th century, the candidates mostly avoided the conventions altogether. In 1860, Lincoln stayed home in Springfield and his supporters did the work. To do otherwise, Lehrman says, "was considered immodest."

Harry Truman was such a terrible speaker that his aides, at the 1948 Democratic convention, decided to give him a list of talking points instead of a speech. To make things worse, just as he reached the stage, a woman rushed up with a cage full of "doves of peace" ? which promptly got loose and, as one aide would later write, "did what pigeons do." The speech went on to be one of Truman's more memorable, but it's hard to forget the pigeons.

There was a time when a rousing convention speech could make history. William Jennings Bryan was a little-known former Nebraska congressman when he arrived in Chicago for the 1896 Democratic National Convention to make a speech in favor of the free-silver movement. Most newspapers covering the event listed him sixth or lower ? if at all.

"He was technically a candidate, but in the way, say, Ron Paul is. Even less than that, actually," says Bensel, author of "Passion and Preferences: William Jennings Bryan and the 1896 Democratic Convention." But after Bryan delivered his now legendary "Cross of Gold" speech, he walked away with the party's nomination ? and a place in the history books.

Sociologist and essayist John Shelton Reed understands that the Republicans don't want another "Pat Buchanan moment" ? the former presidential candidate's infamous "culture war" speech at the 1992 GOP convention in Houston.

"There is a religious war going on in this country," Buchanan thundered from the podium. "It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we shall be as the Cold War itself. For this war is for the soul of America. And in that struggle for the soul of America, Clinton and Clinton are on the other side, and George Bush is on our side."

"Everybody seemed to agree that was not helpful," Reed says. "They didn't check it in advance, I'm pretty sure."

Christie is famous for speaking bluntly and loudly. But he understands that Tampa is not the place for winging it. In an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Christie acknowledged as much. "I don't use text almost ever," he said. "So most of the time I think about what it is I want to talk about, and then I get up there and I talk about it."

Given the venue and the time restrictions, Christie said, "they want you to work off a text, and that's fine." But he noted that former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour reminded him that he needed to "be Chris.'"

"If that means I stray a little off the prompter every once in a while," he said, "that's the way it goes."

Christie did not stray much, except to add emphasis or focus his audience. And while he did seem a tad less spontaneous than usual, his delivery ? "I know this simple truth and I'm not afraid to say it" ? was every bit as powerful.

It's that delicate balance ? preparation without overpackaging ? that is so difficult to strike. Rick Andrews, who teaches improv at New York's Magnet Theater, works with businesspeople trying to communicate better. The trick for politicians, he says, is to try to "appear casual, off the cuff ? when you're not."

"We would be shocked if they weren't prepared," Andrews says. "But we also don't want them to appear to be overly prepared."

Republicans, including Romney, have openly mocked President Barack Obama's use of the teleprompter. But Ann Romney, the former Massachusetts governor's wife, seemed relieved to know she would not be up on that stage alone. She told reporters Tuesday that she had "never gone off of a written text."

"I had a lot of input in this, I must say, and a lot of, um, tweaking where I felt like was getting what I really wanted to say and from my heart," she said.

Whatever butterflies she might have had going in, they had flown soon after she took the stage. She even went off script at regular intervals, channeling Oprah Winfrey after a passage about mothers, wives, sisters and daughters: "I love you women, and I hear your voices," she shouted.

Mitt Romney has a reputation for being somewhat stiff. But Lehrman is looking forward to his performance Thursday evening ? particularly given that the GOP nominee has been working with an oratory coach. "I see him being more impassioned and more natural," Lehrman says. "He's been able to fake naturalness better."

And in the process, perhaps, something valuable is lost. That's how Bensel sees it. By sculpting their conventions so carefully, he says, both political parties are missing out on the chance to make history.

"The problem is, when you script the speech, the crowd isn't involved and there's no feedback, there's no spontaneity," Bensel says. "The whole connection between the party rank and file as audience and whoever's speaking is broken. You are just an audience. You aren't a participant in the creation of a political moment."

My Kind of Retro: Disco Skating ? spunktitud3

Ice Skating at The Rink JCube

Living it up at The Rink, JCube

Faced with the recent sweltering hot weather, I did something I have not done for almost 7 years ? I went ice-skating to escape the heat. Ice skating was never really on my radar since the ice rinks in Singapore were far and few, and so small I felt akin to a hamster running in its own exercise wheel ? what?s the fun of going round and round in while trying to avoid the throngs of falling people, I wondered. Furthermore, ice skating felt like an activity only meant for the young, maybe because older folks like clumsy me are likely to fall and break our bones. I took extra effort NOT to fall cos? it?s not the age to be proudly sporting blue-black bruises.

Located at the heart of JCube on Level 3, The Rink recently had its official opening on 12 August 2012. It has a 460 seat gallery and the 60 by 30 metre ice rink (Singapore?s first and only Olympic-size rink) is designed to host international events and competitions for sports such as ice hockey, curling and speed skating. Over 80,000 people have visited The Rink since its soft launch on 2 April 2012, and it will be hosting its first ice hockey league from September 2012.

The Rink is the first sports facility developed under the Singapore Sports Council?s Community/Sports Facilities Scheme which encourages the integration of community or sports facilities in private commercial developments. A national Learn-to-Skate programme has been rolled out to equip participants with foundational skills in ice skating through a progressive five-week course. Those who are more in for the fun can boogie it up at the disco-themed ice skating sessions held on the first and third Fridays of every month.

University of Miami researchers identify specific attributes among young children that affect school performance

CORAL GABLES, FL (August 28, 2012)Parents of young children hope for a successful kindergarten experience that will set their youngsters on the right path of their educational journey. Some worry about their kids not adapting to the school environment, particularly when the children are talkative and overactive. Yet, a new study by the University of Miami (UM) shows that overly shy preschool children are at greater academic risk than their chatty and boisterous peers.

The study is one of the first to follow the social and academic progress of children throughout the preschool year. The report shows that children displaying shy and withdrawn behavior early in the preschool year started out with the lowest academic skills and showed the slowest gains in academic learning skills across the year. The findings are published online, in advance of print, by the Journal of School Psychology.

"Everybody wants their children to be ready for kindergarten, to know their ABCs and to be able to count, but they sometimes don't understand that having social-emotional readiness is equally important," says Rebecca J. Bulotsky-Shearer, assistant professor of psychology at UM College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and principal investigator of the study.

Behavioral problems in the classroom arise when there is a gap between the child's developmental skills and the expectations of the school environment, according to the study. The findings suggest that children who are shy in the classroom have trouble engaging and learning.

"Preschool children who are very introverted tend to 'disappear within the classroom,'" says Elizabeth R. Bell, doctoral candidate in developmental psychology, at UM and co-author of the study. "It appears that while these children are not causing problems in the school, they are also not engaging in classroom activities and interactions, where almost all learning occurs during this age."

The results also raise the possibility that children who are loud and disruptive may be more likely to get the teacher's attention and benefit from specific educational strategies. "There are many classroom-based interventions for children that are disruptive and acting out in the classroom," says Bulotsky-Shearer. "I think the children who show an extreme amount of shyness and are withdrawn are most at risk of getting missed."

The researcher hopes the new findings encourage the development of appropriate classroom interventions tailored to the needs of different children, as well as appropriate training and professional development for teachers, to help them identify children who need help in specific areas. "This is especially important within early childhood programs such as Head Start, serving a diverse population of low-income children and families," says Bulotsky-Shearer.

The study analyzes information from 4, 417 prekindergarten children in the Head Start Program, ages 3 to 5, from a diverse population, living in a large urban district of the northeast. Six profile types were used to describe the preschoolers: 1.Well adjusted; 2. Adjusted with mild disengagement; 3.Moderately socially and academically disengaged; 4. Disruptive with peers; 5.Extremely socially and academically disruptive; 6.Extremely socially and academically disengaged.

The teachers assessed the emotional and behavioral characteristics, as well as the academic progress of each child, at three points in time during the preschool year. The findings show that older kids and girls tended to be better adjusted to the class, exhibited less behavioral problems, and had higher levels of social literacy, language and math skills.

###

The study is titled "Latent Profiles of Preschool Behavior within Learning, Peer, and Teacher Contexts: Identifying Subgroups of Children at Academic Risks across the Preschool Year." Ximena Dominguez, research social scientist, at SRI International is also a co-author of the study.

The researchers would like to expand their work into other areas of the country with different demographics, to better understand the effect of classroom quality and the types of interactions that teachers are providing. This effort may be beneficial to different groups of preschool children across the country.

OODA Loop - Technological Leapfrogging in the Developing World ...

Governments and NGOs alike have lauded the explosion of cellular phones in the developing world. The World Telecommunications Union reported in 2011 that 79% of the population in developing states have a mobile phone. The planet now boasts over 6 billion cellular phone subscriptions. Landlines and internet availability have never approached availability and usage on such a massive scale. While many organizations hoped to achieve similar successes with other technologies, the vast majority of attempts to ?leapfrog? technological predecessors fail. The cellphone sits on a short list of successful leapfrogging technologies. This list and those technologies absent from the list suggest a model and likely path that developing countries will follow on their trek to the ever-elusive goal of development.

In countries that lack the transportation and energy infrastructure of the developed world, the cell phone helps to account for transportation inadequacies and spotty power supplies. News reports continue to record the many uses of the phones in developing economies. These usages ranges from fishermen using cell phones to find the best prices for their catch to hospitals using networks of text messages to monitor blood bank levels. One anecdote records the USAID transferal of salary payments to Afghani police officers from cash to mobile payment; the officers thought they had been given a 30% raise when, in reality, the system merely eliminated theft from corrupt officials. Agriculture, heavy industry, service industries, logistics, education, advertising, and banking have, to a large extent, gone mobile in the developing world. Because the majority of the cellular communication uses SMS text messaging and calls, older phones are not excluded from these networks.

After gaining its place as an economic necessity, the cell phone has firmly established itself as a social necessity in many countries. To be without a cellphone is to sit on the lowest rung of the social ladder in many countries. The end result of the economic and social necessities is that citizens in developing nations spend large fractions of their income on their cell phones. Many spend over 10% of their income. This has, in turn, opened many business opportunities for entrepreneurs as developing nation purchasing power increases alongside the spread of cell phones.

This cellular culture has developed its own nuanced economic flow that offers a striking contrast to Western systems. Advertising in particular is learning to stray away from the Western type-set and forge its own path in developing nations. Many companies in developing nations are turning away from the conventional billboard, newspaper, radio, and television broadcast ads. Their favored alternative is becoming ads sent through mobile phones. These ads exchange cell phone minutes for ads or surveys sent through the phone. Its perks include improved targeting of particular audiences while it puts money back in the pockets of the consumers, the cell phone users. Instead of funneling money to advertising companies, advertising pays consumers. Companies are distributing surveys and coupons through these methods in over 60 countries. The market and the services are both expanding and improving with time. One US-based advertising company claims that if half of the $200 billion spent on advertising in the developing world were moved to cellular advertisements, it would be the equivalent of giving one billion people a 5% raise. Current major markets in this advertisement niche include India, Indonesia, China, Nigeria, and the Philippines.

The cellphone has been an unparalleled success in the developing world. It has shaped the economy and culture. Why is it that other technologies have not spread across the developing world, closing the technology gap and connecting billions to their many benefits? If the cell phone is unique, what other technologies have similar characteristics and potential?

Studies by the World Bank and others suggest that most technologies piggy-back on their predecessors, even when they are seemingly unrelated. Free laptop programs for the world?s poorest children do little good when the children?s schools are in shambles and the children themselves are illiterate and lack consistent access to power supplies. Internet usage by adults is also dependent upon information literacy and reliable electricity. The latest modern medical practices do little to help countries lacking basic sanitation standards and first-aid level medical availability. Business loans and banking options are nearly impossible without a functional government to maintain, enforce, and adjudicate property laws and regulations.

Information illiteracy and poverty are two major social and cultural ills that prevent widespread technology use. This article?s scope, however, ends with the technological barriers, those things that make technology diffusion difficult or impossible even with technologically literate and wealthy populations.

In developing countries, the basic infrastructural barriers to new technologies are the lack of centralized grids of the sort established in the western world in the 20th century. Even before the 20th century, technologies in the western world were snapped to grids and access was spread out as far as possible. Railroads, canals, and roads connected trade and travel routes as efficiently as means would permit. Infrastructure grew alongside the technology, from transAtlantic telegraph cables in 1858 to the internet boom in the 90s and 00s. The western world followed a well-trodden path with the spread of each new technology.

While a massive infrastructural development program across the developing world would improve transportation and connect disconnected economies, such an undertaking is an absurdity. Africa alone can swallow up four times the land area of the continental US and could digest 4 times the US highway system without a burp.

A working system for improved connectivity would follow the pattern of the cell phone. Without central power grids, localized solutions have become an economic necessity in many places. Local options and examples abound across the developing world. Some opt for fossil fuels, others spearhead unique options made possible by their location. In the Philippines, many villages are opting for micro-hydro power. In India, companies are using rice husks, an overabundant and mostly useless resource, to power electrical power stations. The World Bank and other organizations are encouraging this model that creates localized power supply independent from grids, unstable states, and other problems that plague development in many developing countries.

Like cell phones and towers, these local power hubs create coverage for a limited region. Economic viability of private ventures and aid programs work together to expand coverage. Like early railroad lines, isolated power hubs become nodes in a greater networks as growth continues, permitting easy connections between regions.

The developing world can leapfrog trains, canals, and telegrams into the world of electricity and the internet. It cannot, however, expect to match the pace of the developed world in new technologies until a foundation of electricity and economic self-sufficiency work in tandem with good government to create the information literacy necessary to spread the full benefits of 21st century technologies to entire populations of developing nations. Unfortunately, this can only begin with the catalyst of potential riches and success that will encourage investment and infrastructural development. Luckily, the developing world holds these potentials in natural resources and human resources.

Even as the western world lacks cell reception in many areas, so will the technological developments miss areas of the developing world. These areas are constantly diminishing, however, as development projects learn from their mistakes and continue to expand. The developing world will still, however, be developing for a long time to come. The best the world might hope for is for a small handful of countries to leave that long list in the decades to come, going from a world of cellphones to the 21st century world of complete cyber connectivity.

Applying Examples of Sustainable Business Risk Management ...

image: risk management Traditional procurement strategies have primarily focused on cost, with most professional consulting firms targeting savings of 7% to 9% of revenue (including: vendor reduction, leverage spend, inventory reductions, transaction efficiencies, and administration savings through centralized functions).? However, growing business sustainability risks and opportunities within the supply chain have many companies reevaluating their purely cost savings driven decision making. ?Our sustainability consulting continues to follow the progress of industries heavily dependent on a healthy and sustainable supply chain.

In a recent Industry Week interview with a major supplier in the auto industry, IW reveals there is still residual turbulence following the economic downturn. ?These affects continue to affect the business sustainability at Dana Holding Corp. and with its Tier 1 suppliers.

"Our success as a company is dependent upon having a strong and viable supply base? The more we can plan, the better cost control we can have, and the better we can mitigate impact to our plants, and most importantly, mitigate impact to our customers? We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we certainly have a roadmap on how we're going to get there." - Gary Baugh, senior director of purchasing for Dana's Power Technologies Group

Our professional consulting has observed many leading companies are now realizing the unique value in elevating sustainable supply chain management as a strategic in-house competency.? We find companies are examining the value of company resources. ?Among the other fronts on which Dana is working to manage supplier risk, the company is:

  • Developing a master database that will detail "risk attributes" for each supplier.
  • Developing analytics and reporting capabilities to determine supplier risk beyond financial factors.
  • Working with its OEM customers and suppliers to establish dual validation of critical raw materials and components.

Growing business eco awareness and resulting business sustainability risk has provided companies with a new perspective to reassess their core functions.? At Taiga Company, our sustainability consulting provides information and business resources to clients of all sizes seeking to make incremental steps??towards a sustainable supply chain. ?We find insight from both the challenges facing each industry individually and the solutions that can be leveraged universally.

Are Radar Jammers Illegal? - Traffic Laws - Law and Daily Life

If you're thinking of using a radar jammer to avoid speeding tickets, think again. Radar jammers are illegal.

Jammers are different from the more popular radar detectors. The detectors allow you to know when cops are using radar guns on the highway. They aren't illegal for passenger vehicles but they also aren't necessarily effective since they only alert you once they detect radar. That may be too late.

Radar jammers work by effectively overcoming the radar guns used by police. The radar signals can't "see" the car which means they can't monitor your speed. The idea is that it can help you avoid a ticket but in reality, they can make the situation even worse.

It's bad news to get caught on an interstate highway with a radar jammer. We're not just talking a $100 ticket or increased insurance premiums either.

Using a radar jammer is a federal offense that can result in a $50,000 fine and/or five years in prison.

Radar jammers are also illegal in some states meaning you could be subject to punishment even if you aren't using it on a federal road. While you shouldn't have one in the first place, be especially sure not to use it in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, or Virginia.

The FCC is very strict about radar jammers which have been illegal since 1996. That means individuals are not allowed to use or sell the devices. Not only that, the FCC bans businesses from advertising the jammers in the first place.

For most radar jammers police can tell you're using one even if they can't clock your speed. The interference with the radar guns makes it clear and cops can pull you over for it.

In the case of laser speed monitoring, laser jammers are available to block monitoring beams. While those aren't against federal law, many states have passed laws banning laser jammers.

Avoid using them in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington D.C.

If you're looking for a legal way to avoid a speeding ticket, our best advice is simply "Don't speed." But if your lead foot is just too heavy, a radar jammer is not the answer. Just because it's out there doesn't mean you're allowed to use it.

Geothermal Heat Pumps (Ground-Source Heat Pumps) are electrically power heat plus chilling systems which airport transfer high temperature to as well as on the planet via some sort of refrigeration process. Geothermal Heat Pumps possess happen to be around operations with regard to over 40 years and also work on exactly the same principle since your current family fridge or maybe air conditioning conditioner.

At depths down below 30 legs (10 meters), ground temps stays on a relentless 42 - fifty-five deg F. (6-12 C) year-round. During winter months season, a new geothermal procedure absorbs the actual heat in the earth, amplifies the idea as well as transfers the idea towards ones home. During the summer, this system absorbs the particular temperature out of indoors in addition to produces them again underground. On a lot of models connected with Geothermal Heat Pumps every day difficulties will be developed virtually any time period the particular heat push operates.

Studies by means of the actual US Department of Energy along with Natural Resources Canada positioned new generation geothermal temperature pushes certainly other heating system in addition to air conditioning programs inside their ability to help protect electricity in addition to minimize CO2 emissions.

When in comparison to a strong electrically warmed up home, geothermal heat pushes consume lower than 1/3 the quality of power vitality to temperature that structure, and that is nearly 66% cut in electricity consumption. Consequently the particular energy electricity business produces merely 1/3 this emissions the idea normally would.

Geothermal Heat sends are offered with regard to equally commercial and housing heat and customizable devices inside a variety of end product capacities, that may support every making design.

What can certainly a home or perhaps business owner be expecting from a Geothermal (Ground Source) Heat Pump?

Most geothermal models demand vertical drilling, until the area as well as layout permit regarding horizontal (trench) installation. The earth properties and also the thermal performance involving rubble vary generally and the width on the geothermal system and this terrain disorders for the installation web page will dominate the amount of drilling or trenching will be required. These variations indicate this significance of your precise approximation before any geothermal trap design could be finalized.

The drilling equipment utilised can perform an enormous purpose in the ultimate selling price tag regarding the entire geothermal system. An suffered drilling contractor, considering the correct drilling rig can certainly execute each of the vital drilling and also piping within a very few hours, nonetheless also your most seasoned driller having far inferior drilling gear need times to do the same project, increasing this fees exponentially. We are already developing drilling machines since 1988 by using 270 products in operations around the world. We conceive, layout and also manufacture our individual drilling equipment, continually setting up a operation common while in the drilling industry. Our most important intent should be to fulfill our users demands around drilling performance, safely, dependability and price reduction. We achieve this specific through custom architectural our rigs especially since the geothermal tool units.

The GT/GWT Series geothermal drilling rigs, versatile, safe and also trustworthy are proving for being ideally suited with the ever-growing requirements of the rapidly rising surface resource high temperature send (GSHP) geothermal industry.

The potent single or dual rotary travel plus the units 35,000 lb (15,000 kg) pullback muscle result in the actual GT/GWT series geothermal drilling rigs could punch very rapidly up to 1200 foot (400m) to make it possible for the actual quick installing on the geothermal devices shut down GSHP loop. Also, the GT/GWT string rigs, currently being somewhat more compact than the usual typical drilling unit, will be ideal for accessing tough terrains and also narrowed space sites.

Milwaukee Specialty Food and Coffee: The Nature of the Product

I spent some time tonight thinking about whether I'd been too harsh on Alterra in my last post. I've largely come to the conclusion that I wasn't. The reflection caused me to think more deeply about the coffee business.

Sometimes I wonder if coffee isn't a business where the nature of the product informs the overall business least. This is most particularly true of Starbucks. On a large scale, Starbucks is attempting to be the Microsoft or Big Blue of coffee, with radical Blond coffee rollouts comparable to the Windows 95 rollout. Rollouts, as a concept, are a bit absurd in the coffee business--but the lifeblood of publicly traded corporations, who need a constant stream of headlines and press releases to keep shareholders happy.

On a more recurrent level, premature seasonal rollouts in the coffee business are an annoyance to many. They seem alien to the nature of the product. More tangible consumer goods, like clothing or school supplies, are seasonal and sold in advance of the season because shrewd consumers benefit from buying early. The price may be more advantageous, or the consumer may simply value the reduced stress that comes from being prepared. On the contrary, the food and drink that is passed over the counter is only relevant in the time frame in which it's consumed.

We're just coming out of a July that made it seem as if the sun would swallow up the earth at any moment, and yet fall drinks such as Pumpkin Spice Lattes are being rolled out. After a brief letup, warm temperatures are back, and I can report that Brady Street is more crowded than I've ever seen it tonight. As someone who enjoys an above-average level of outdoor activity, I can state with confidence that noticeable autumn temperatures usually don't hit Wisconsin until October.

Frankly, the thought of a Pumpkin Spice latte seems unappetizing in this warm weather. It's not a flavor that has appeal until it is cold enough outside to see one's breath. Holiday rollouts in mid-October or even earlier seem even more absurd. Wisconsin is resplendent in the fall, and what truly sickens me is the thought of missing out on that in favor of shopping at some big box store (well, I guess not so much anymore) or mall.

Honestly, I think the only "rollout" that should matter in coffee--or any business for that matter--is the one that happens when the customer enters your space, whether that be physical or virtual. I would think that particularly in the coffee business, you want to be saying "no" to the customer as rarely as possible. It's not a penny profit business like a grocery store, and even grocery stores ease the blow with rain checks. Don't be out of things--if the customer has a want that you've put in his or her mind, either fill it or jump through hoops to try to. If you've run out of a product, remove the advertising materials so that the customer doesn't have it in mind. Run another featured coffee instead and put that in the customer's mind.

So that's why my earlier post wasn't too harsh. They had bags of Costa Rica Herbazu Honey sitting on the counter, but no one thought to fill the hopper with one of them. Similarly, a Starbucks in Scottsdale, Arizona apparently wouldn't make me a pourover of Tribute Blend, though plenty of beans (and, presumably, hot water) were in the store. If they're aware of this evident conflict but refuse to solve it, that seems rather withholding. It's never acceptable to direct four-letter words at people, and I didn't mean it that way in my earlier post. Rather, it was directed at such behavior in the "service" industry.

Apple Wins: Proves Samsung Infringed Patents As Jury Awards $1 ...

Apple has won most of its case against Samsung. The jury found in Apple?s favor on an overwhelming majority of claims. Samsung was found to have infringed six of seven Apple patents. Conversely, the jury?found against Samsung on almost all claims, including arguments that Apple?s patents were invalid.

The jury also found that Samsung?s infringement was ?willful? in several cases and awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages. By the same token Samsung mostly drew a blank on its claims and was awarded $0 damages.

The Korean handset maker will certainly appeal. But the outlook for success on appeal is limited. The verdict vindicates Apple?s contention that Samsung ?shamelessly copied? the iPhone. It?s a major victory for Apple. It?s a humiliating defeat for Samsung?s legal counsel.

It will take a little while to fully digest the outcome and analyze what it will mean for Samsung?s handsets, for Android more broadly and for the industry as a whole. Some people will lament the outcome as striking a blow against competition. By contrast others will argue that the decision now forces Apple?s competitors to genuinely ?innovate.?

I expected a positive outcome for Apple but not one quite this lopsided. Samsung was almost entirely shut out, although some of its devices were deemed not to have infringed Apple patents. Apple failed to prove that Samsung?s patents were invalid and it failed on antitrust claims against Samsung. The Galaxy Tab was also found not to have infringed the iPad?s design. Otherwise it was a massive legal victory for Cupertino in a very important and closely watched case.

There will now be extensive analysis of what the case means. Each aspect of the verdict will likely be dissected and discussed. We?ll also offer our thoughts later as we reflect on the outcome. With just over two days of deliberation the jury appears to have reached its verdict much more quickly than expected given the complexity of the claims and issues.

Below is how the reading of the verdict unfolded in more or less real time. I wasn?t present in the courtroom but relied on Twitter, CNET and TheVerge?s live in-courtroom reporting.

The verdict as it unfolded:

The jury found that Samsung did infringe at least some of Apple?s patents. The verdict is being read right now.

More Samsung infringement found, including the Galaxy 10.1. However not all Samsung devices found to be infringing.

The verdict is moving claim by patent claim through each patent and set of Samsung devices allegedly infringing.?This is so far a victory for Apple. Most of the verdict is going its way.

More?infringement found?on Apple?s ?381 patent.? No Samsung devices spared on this one.

This is turning out to be the mixed verdict I predicted earlier, but mostly positive for Apple. Samsung?s claims have yet to be read however.

Galaxy S/S 4G smartphone found to be infringing. Samsung is taking a major hit here, though some devices escaping.

So far 7 patent claims have been addressed. In almost every case some Samsung infringement has been found.

Willful infringement? The jury says ?yes? for most of the Samsung devices. This has big damages implications.

All of Apple?s patents were found to be valid by the jury. Samsung had claimed that some were invalid. That defense failed apparently.

So far about 75 percent of what Apple claimed has been vindicated by this jury. The court is still going through the?individual?claims and questions in Apple?s case. The jury has yet to get to Samsung?s claims.

Apple is losing on some of its ?trade dress claims.? No on to damages.

The jury has awarded $1.05 billion in damages to Apple. That?s less important to Apple than the idea that its claims were vindicated and that Samsung may have to change some of its designs.

Now Samsung?s claims against Apple are being addressed. So far the jury is finding ?no? or against Samsung. Samsung has lost so far on all of its claims against Apple.?Apple did not prove Samsung?s patents were invalid however.

Apple did not prove antitrust violations against Samsung. So it didn?t succeed across the board. But Samsung won almost nothing.?If it were a baseball game the score would be Apple 10, Samsung 1.
