Business Advertising Directories ? SMB Advice & Tips

Online business advertising directories are an essential part of building and maintaining your small business? online presence. Not only do these directories help increase exposure, business directories can add relevancy to your site which is vital for search engine ranking.

There is a wide range of online advertising directories. Some offer free submissions, others charge fees. Some are designed as general directories; others are industry or location specific. A concentrated effort to list your business in multiple directories is a low cost way to gain online exposure.

The advantages of listing your business in as many directories as possible go beyond increased exposure to potential customers. Incoming links to your web site are of critical importance when it comes to search engine rankings. Search engines, like Google, place significant emphasis on link popularity, or the number of outside links pointing to your web site. Business directory listings play an important role in increasing incoming links.

Many directory listings allow customers to rate and review their experiences with your business. While this can be a two-edged sword, positive reviews and comments can greatly increase your customer base. If someone posts a negative experience, most directory sites allow a rebuttal, giving you the perfect opportunity to regain goodwill, address the submitters issue, and show other potential customers that you are committed to quality and customer satisfaction.

Of course, increased exposure is one of the main advantages of using a variety of business directories. It stands to reason that the more directories in which your business listing appears, the more people will be drawn to your web site.

There are three main types of business directories. They are:

GeneralRegionalIndustry Specific

General business advertising directories list businesses in all industries, specializations, and regions. Most general business directories offer free listings and differing levels of more prominent sponsored listing options. Examples of general business advertising directories include:

Business.com ? Business.com is a general business site dedicated to providing business information, how-to articles, directories, and additional resources. Directories match customers with needed services and products. Free listings, pay-per-click, and banner advertising levels are available.

RichDir.com ? Rich?s business directories provide a wealth of business information as well as business listings. Listings are submitted by business owners and reviewed for acceptance. Premium listings are available.

Best of the Web ? Best of the Web is one of the oldest directory sites. Not a business specific direction, they feature general, blog, and local directories, business owners may create their own listing, upload photos, and take advantage of a free get started option.

DMOZ ? DMOZ, or the Open Directory Project, is a large, comprehensive, human-edited web directory. A global community of volunteers maintains and constructs the directories. All listings, including those for business, are free.

Regional directories list businesses in specific geographical locations. Most regional directories break local businesses into industry categories and encourage customer reviews. Many regional directories offer business owners the opportunity to announce events, create coupons, monitor visitor traffic, and contact customers privately. Some of the currently popular regional business advertising directories include:

Yelp ? Yelp offers free listings for business owners and managers. ?Yelpers? rate and review various types of businesses, from restaurants to pet sitters. Yelp encourages users to socialize using online chatting and community tools.

Google Places ? Google Places offers free business listings with some advanced features. Photos, coupons, directions, and more can be included in a Google Places listing. Listing with Google Places improves your visibility in Google search listings and on Google Maps.

Yellow Pages ? A popular destination for consumers, Yellow Pages offers a free basic business listing and various paid options.

Yellow Book ? Yellow Book is another popular local search directory for consumers. Yellow Book offers a wide variety of free and premium tools for business owners.

CitySlick.net ? CitySlick.net offers a free service and various levels of premium features, including video promotions and classified ads.

Industry-related business advertising directories focus on a specific business type. Consumers looking for a competent attorney, for example, enter their zip code in a web site search field and receive a listing of nearby professionals. Some industry directories provide contact forms for each listing so that potential clients may contact the business professional directly.

Other useful types of business directories include listings with your local Chamber of Commerce, professional organizations, and local media web sites.

Aspire: Magic Johnson's channel for black families

NEW YORK (AP) ? As the crowd counted down, Magic Johnson pulled a large silver lever jutting from a box labeled "ASPiRE." With that, his new cable network went live.

Then stagehands whisked the contraption off the dais at Aspire's gala premiere party Wednesday night. The switch was just a prop, of course, connected to nothing.

But Magic Johnson's ties to the African-American community (not to mention sports history and contemporary culture) are direct and strong.

Now, the basketball great and business tycoon is leveraging his clout and good name to launch Aspire.

"We have a big platform for African-American work," Johnson told the gathered. "Family driven content, positive images of African-Americans ? that's what we want that platform for!"

Big aspirations, indeed, as Aspire makes its debut. Initially it's available in about 7 million homes and in 16 of the top 25 African-American markets (including New York, Atlanta, Chicago and Washington). It can be seen by some customers served by Time Warner Cable Inc. and by Comcast Corp., the nation's largest cable operator, which is introducing the minority-oriented Aspire as part of an agreement struck with the Federal Communications Commission when Comcast purchased NBC Universal.

Aspire's reach will grow to 12 million homes by year's end, to 20 million to 30 million homes by the end of 2013, and to 40 million homes within two years, according to Johnson.

"Focus groups told us African-Americans want more family content on TV," he says a few hours before the party. "If they would have told me, 'We don't need another channel, there's not an opportunity for you,' we wouldn't be sitting here."

Seated in a raised director's chair whose exaggerated height seems made-to-order for the towering former L.A. Lakers point guard, Johnson is speaking with a reporter in an NBC green room during a busy day of meetings and media appearances.

"I wouldn't get into this if I didn't feel there was an opportunity," he goes on. "That's what I do. I look for opportunities."

Johnson doesn't dismiss the growing roster of other networks targeting black viewers.

"BET dominates the young people and does a great job," he says. "TV One skews a little older. We're gonna skew older than both of them. Blacks want options; they want variety, like everybody else. There'll be enough viewers for all of us. So everybody wins."

He says Aspire is aiming for black families with a slate of enlightening and positive programming ? the sort of fare that everyone can gather in the living room to watch, "the way I grew up," Johnson fondly recalls.

Aspire will air movies, documentaries, music and comedy, as well as faith and inspirational programs.

Initially, the schedule consists of acquisitions, including long-ago series like "The Bill Cosby Show," ''I Spy," ''Julia" and "The Flip Wilson Show." The network promises documentaries chronicling real-life events, people and places that shaped black history. Movies include "Shaft," ''Bird," ''Sarafina!" and "Lilies of the Field."

Eventually, Aspire plans to create its own programming. For that, Johnson hopes to tap black artists ranging from young up-and-comers to the likes of Spike Lee and Tyler Perry.

But what about a certain world-class star already on the payroll? Will Earvin "Magic" Johnson step in front of the Aspire cameras?

"I may do a show interviewing celebrities," he says. "Or a business show. We haven't planned it yet, but African-Americans want to know how to build wealth. They want to know how to start a business or grow one. Home ownership. Having good credit. I think I'm going to have to go on and teach them that sort of thing."

The principal owner of Aspire is Magic Johnson Enterprises, with the 52-year-old Johnson as the network's chairman and CEO.

But Aspire is teamed with Atlanta-based GMC (formerly the Gospel Music Network), which, available in about 50 million homes, focuses on uplifting music and family entertainment. GMC is providing operational infrastructure (what Johnson dubs "the back of the house") for Aspire, also based in Atlanta.

Johnson declines to say exactly what he's investing in Aspire as its principal owner, but acknowledges "it takes $100 (million) or $150 million just to turn the lights on and really get it going ? and we're gonna be in that neighborhood."

Already, Johnson has landed five blue chip "charter brand partners": Coca-Cola Co., Chrysler, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., L'Oreal and Nationwide Insurance. He says his network is on track to be "almost break-even in a year."

Johnson sees Aspire as the logical next step in his burgeoning media empire, whose holdings include 20 radio stations, Vibe magazine and the "Soul Train" brand.

But an almost dizzying array of other investments includes real estate, restaurants, a prepaid debit card he soon will introduce and, of course, the Los Angeles Dodgers, purchased in May for $2 billion by a group he fronted.

"I am SO proud of the Dodgers," he grins when that subject comes up. "I'm like a little kid! To know I own the Dodgers is even blowing ME away!"

In short, Johnson's career as an NBA legend and Hall of Famer is rivaled by his entrepreneurial efforts, which, along with his philanthropic and motivational work, largely cater to the black community.

"I've been doing business almost as long as I've been playing basketball," he says. "I bought a radio station when I was 19 years old, when I first got drafted by the Lakers."

For now, despite his many business interests, he's giving Aspire top priority.

"When you're starting a business, you have to be more involved day-to-day," he says. "I'm a control freak. Even though I allow people to do their jobs, I want to know everything, and I HAVE to know everything: It's my brand, my name; everything is out there on the line."

Looking to Aspire's future, he points out how he always had two big dreams: to play in the NBA and be a businessman.

"I don't know why God blessed me with this life, but I'm glad he did, and I love it," Johnson sums up. "And I'm full steam ahead!"

For Mitt Romney, there's no escaping health care

WASHINGTON (AP) ? So much for Mitt Romney escaping health care.

Reminders of the Republican presidential candidate's signature achievement as Massachusetts governor ? a sweeping state health care overhaul ? now are everywhere. And Democrats and liberals ? from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to President Barack Obama to party faithful in Congress ? are making sure everyone knows that Romney's requirement that all people have health insurance was the basis of the federal mandate that the Supreme Court just upheld as a tax.

"Congress followed Massachusetts' lead," Ginsburg wrote in the landmark decision. By design or not, she ended up giving Democrats ammunition against Romney.

Romney has spent much of the presidential campaign shying away from talking about the law he signed as governor and that Obama used as a blueprint for his national health care plan. Both measures require individuals to have health insurance, mandate that businesses offer healthcare to their employees and provide subsidies or exemptions for people who can't afford it. Both laws also impose penalties on people who can afford health insurance but decide not to buy coverage.

The Supreme Court's ruling Thursday highlighted those similarities.

Mindful of them, Romney long has sought to justify his position: He defends the Massachusetts law but says he would repeal Obama's national version. The Republican also has tried to explain away comparisons between the two measures by telling audiences he would have been happy to help the president write a better law.

Obama "does me great favor by saying I was the inspiration," Romney has said. "If that was the case, why didn't you call me? Why didn't you ask me what was wrong?"

Since the court's ruling, the Republican has taken care not to mention his state law. He left it out of his statement Thursday in response to the Supreme Court ruling and didn't bring it up when he talked about health care at a private fundraiser Friday in New York.

"What happened yesterday calls for greater urgency, I believe, in the election," Romney told donors. "I think people recognize that if you want to replace Obamacare you've got to replace President Obama."

In the day since the ruling, GOP officials have criticized Obama by pointing out the Supreme Court's determination that the requirement that all individuals carry health insurance is a tax. But in using that to cast Obama as a tax-raiser, Republicans risk turning the focus on their candidate. The state law Romney signed includes a similar penalty for people who don't buy insurance.

Democrats have been hammering him on this point, citing a 2009 opinion piece in which Romney wrote that Massachusetts "established incentives for those who were uninsured to buy insurance." In the piece, he acknowledged that the requirement amounted to a tax: "Using tax penalties, as we did . encourages 'free riders' to take responsibility for themselves."

Perhaps past statements like that are why Romney has been careful not to emphasize the court's characterization of Obama's mandate as a tax. Instead, Romney notes that the federal health law includes roughly $500 billion in new tax revenue ? an argument he has been making for months.

That number, a campaign spokeswoman said, comes from Congressional Budget Office testimony from March 2011. It refers to a figure that doesn't include the $54 billion that the government expects to collect from people who pay the penalty instead of complying with the requirement to purchase health insurance over the next 10 years.

While Romney pointedly has downplayed the connection between Massachusetts and the national law, some fellow Republicans haven't been as careful.

"There's only one candidate, Gov. Romney, who has committed that he will repeal the Obamney, uh, the Obamacare tax increase," Republican Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Friday during a conference call organized by the Republican National Committee.

In the unforced error, Jindal inadvertently invoked a phrase coined during the primary by former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who dropped out of the presidential race shortly after trying to attack Romney by dubbing the health care law "ObamneyCare."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum was more direct in linking the state and federal laws. "I think what you're seeing is it hasn't worked in Massachusetts," the former Pennsylvania senator told CNN Thursday night.

Santorum is backing Romney now, but during the primary, he cited health care as the reason why Romney is "the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, another rival, called it "a forerunner of Obamacare."

Back then, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who largely steered clear of attacking Romney during the GOP debates, also wrote to Iowa supporters that Romney "fought for state-run health care while governor, but now laughingly wants you to believe he will fight to repeal Obamacare."

During the primary, Romney struggled to distance himself from the law partly because he risked stoking longtime criticism that he is willing to change his core beliefs for political gain.

"I'm not going to change my positions by virtue of being in a presidential campaign," Romney told Fox News in the days leading up to the Iowa caucuses. "What we did was right for the people of Massachusetts."

Researchers probe origin of optimized antibodies against infections

This press release is available in German.

An organism's ability to make new antibodies and use them to optimize its own immune defenses is of central importance in the fight against pathogens. In the case of severe infections, the overall relative speed with which an immune response proceeds could mean the difference between life and death. An international team of scientists, among them systems immunologist Prof. Michael Meyer-Hermann of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) of Braunschweig, Germany, has now found that asymmetric division of antibody-producing B cells speeds up the body's immune defenses. Early on, one daughter cell starts making antibodies while the other works at refining its own antibodies. The researchers' findings are due to be published in the upcoming issue of the scientific journal, Cell Reports.

Our immune system produces antibodies as effective long-term weapons against viral or bacterial infections or following vaccination. Antibodies are made in lymph nodes by specialized cells called B lymphocytes. In certain areas within a lymph node - called germinal centers - these B cells first undergo a process of selection.

B cells proliferate, mutate, and thereby change their antibodies. The immune system then checks to make sure whether or not these mutations translate into an improved immune response. If so, the cells in question are selected. The final outcome is the production of optimized antibodies capable of efficiently attaching to a particular pathogen and thereby inactivating it or labeling it for subsequent destruction by phagocytic scavenger cells. "As part of this evolutionary process, the immune system takes turns between chance mutations and best-candidate-selection," explains Michael Meyer-Hermann, Director of the HZI's Department of Systems Immunology and professor of systems biology at the Technische Universitt Braunschweig. "We are calling it the 'recycling hypothesis'." All of this allows the immune system to make sure that any antibody it produces is maximally effective against the particular pathogen it is looking to fight.

A year and a half ago, an international team of New York-based and HZI researchers described this process of antibody optimization experimentally in great detail. However, up until now, the nature of the trade-off relationship between mutation and selection was unclear. "There has been a lot of debate about whether or not one should picture this process as a one-way street or as a roundabout," says Meyer-Hermann. As the study's first author, Meyer-Hermann has analyzed his colleagues' experimental results mathematically and determined that the earlier measurements are only compatible with the idea of a roundabout.

At the beginning of the year, a team of British researchers from London showed that B cell division is asymmetric, resulting in production of unequal daughter cells. At first, the purpose of this kind of asymmetric cellular division seemed uncertain. Meyer-Hermann's analyses suggest that one of the two daughter cells leaves the germinal center and starts producing antibodies while the other stays behind and undergoes another round of mutation and selection inside the germinal center. The mathematical model illustrates the advantage of this type of set-up. While one fairly specialized daughter cell is already making antibodies, its clone, which can be further optimized in the next round, stays behind. Compared with symmetric division, in asymmetric division there is a tenfold increase in the number of antibodies produced. In addition, the cell that stays behind in the germinal center stores information regarding a successful antibody it has produced, and the optimization process thus concludes more quickly. "This kind of time-saving in antibody production can be a real life-saver in the case of a dangerous infection," explains Michael Meyer-Hermann.

RIM cutting 5,000 jobs

TORONTO ? Research In Motion Limited (TSX:RIM) said Thursday that it is cutting 5,000 jobs as it restructures its operations and that the launch of its much anticipated BlackBerry 10 smartphone will not happen until the beginning of next year.

The launch of the new smartphones, seen as key to the recovery of the company, had been expected later this year and will now miss the important holiday shopping season.

"I am not satisfied with these results and continue to work aggressively with all areas of the organization and the board to implement meaningful changes to address the challenges," said chief executive Thorsten Heins in a release.

"Our top priority going forward is the successful launch of our first BlackBerry 10 device, which we now anticipate will occur in the first quarter of calendar 2013."

The company announced the cuts and delays as it reported a loss of $518 million or 99 cents per share for its latest quarter. The loss compared with a profit of $695 million or $1.33 per share a year ago.

Revenue for the three months fell to $2.81 billion from $4.91 billion.

Excluding one-time items including a non-cash charge to goodwill, the company said it lost $192 million or 37 cents per share diluted.

During the quarter, RIM shipped 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones and approximately 260,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets.

In its outlook, the company said it expects the next several quarters to continue to be very challenging for its business.

RIM said it expects to report an operating loss in the second quarter of fiscal 2013, as RIM continues to invest in marketing programs and continues to work through the transition to BlackBerry 10.

Google wants you to join the party, announces Google+ Events (video)

At the tail end of today's Google I/O keynote, the company demoed Google+ Events, which, as you might imagine, let's you invite your virtual buds to an in-person hangout. You've probably already guessed that there's some pretty tight integration with Mountain View's other virtual properties, including Calendar, which means that sending your friends or coworkers a "save the date" to brunch or brainstorming no longer requires clunky email, or a phone call. That's not to say that your contacts need to opt-in to the search giant's social networking site to join the fun -- email invites are still available by typing your friend's address alongside your circles, or individual friends should you wish to plan an awkward inter-group soiree. You can choose from a variety of themes for your e-vite, which integrate motion or static banners. Once the fun begins, you can hop into Party Mode from your mobile, and photos you shoot during the event will appear beside the invite -- friends can add pics to the page as well, which you can later download. For now, please accept our invitation to jump past the break, where a Google demo video awaits.

How We Marketed Our Home For Sale By Owner ? FSBO ? In a Month

Posted on Thursday, June 28th, 2012

We listed our home in n . Vermont with a real estate professional in The fall 2006. Counsel given to us was ?It?s delayed in the year as well as things are shifting slow. You should probably wait until up coming Spring to ascertain if the real estate market picks up.? Not very stimulating to say the least. And then we agreed as well as withdrew our record after the realtor sponsored an empty house in support of one several visited.

What do real estate organizations do? Effectively, they market your home on the web, via The local mls, local newspaper publishers and open houses. Other than getting a record in The local mls, you can do the rest of the things on your own and probably greater. Remember, you?re selling For sale by owner (for sale by owner) and all sorts of your marketing efforts may be directed into one, highly effective direction. Real estate agent has many listings to cope with, so their efforts to market your home could be diluted.

Here are some ideas for marketing your home speedily as a For sale by owner:

Place any block advert in your nearby newspaper. The very best day to position an ad is in the Sunday release. That is wherever people regularly go to look at open residences and listings. If your budget allows that, good second choices could be the Friday as well as Saturday versions. Don?t bother with the remainder of the week unless you?ve got cash to burn.

Open house how-to: Check your local On the newspaper advertisements for open houses. Many Realtors routine their open houses from the same period of time, such as 1 to 3pm. That does not allow potential customers much time to find out all the residences they may need to view. Your strategy is to get started on earlier, like 12pm or afterwards in the morning such as Only two to 6pm.

Preparing for outdoors house. Clean, clean, clear! Nothing entices a customer more than a clear home. This suggests that a home has been looked after and well maintained. Make sure that things are all picked up, well-organized and get gone clutter. A new buyer may be looking at a home in the $400K array. Imagine walking into an empty house at the Colonial design home priced at $425K only to always be greeted by gouged up wood floors, cluttered bedrooms and soiled kitchen surfaces. The next open house is an individual level farm priced at $350K. It?s bright, spotlessly neat and shows like a new home. What type would suit your needs more? Although a customer may be interested in the trendy Colonial, it?s not hard to shift gears and fall in love with the cheaper but much nicer single level ranch.

What about baking pastries and producing bread? Be done with it. Go with a number of potpourri or aromatic candles rather. The homely, fresh prepared goods regimen is so a cliche that a lot of buyers might care significantly less. Also, you may not want men and women dropping cookie crumbs all over your carpets throughout an open property?

Get on the internet. Other than the local Sunday cardstock, the next best position to sell for sale by owner is on the web. Do a search for fsbo?s in your area and see what comes up on page one of the listings. Check out the website?s advertising rates, etc. Most importantly, is the web site easy to use and find listings? If you?ve been buying a home would this specific be the site you would use frequently?

One of the most highly effective and free of charge places for you to showcase your current for sale by owner advert is about Craigslist. Go to Craigslist as well as narrow that down to research online for real house in your area. Straightforward ads are free of charge but you will add links as well as photos. Design an attractive site for your for sale by owner listing and set a link in your Craigslist advert pointing with it. Get a Three hundred and sixty virtual trip done as well as link which within your site.

Be prepared. Possess a ?sellers property inspection report? available for your current potential buyers to watch. This will solution many of their questions about your own home and indicate that you are well prepared for a easy, trouble free deal. Make sure you possess copies of a purchase contract available as well. If you are able to get a deposit, it should be payable for a real estate law firm via an escrow account.
Don?t discuss too much. Supply the potential buyers area to think as well as explore your own home. Answer any questions briefly as well as truthfully. Do not ?oversell? your home or even change the topic as it can create buyers careful.

Follow up. Make a record of brands and phone figures from clients who view your own home. Give them a few days and then call to follow up with these people. If they are not really interested in your own home, ask for any honest comments they might possess.

Communicate. When you invest in a deposit and buying agreement, get hold of your real estate law firm as soon as possible and make sure all is in order. Airbnb Redesigns And Introduces Wish Lists To Make Curating And Discovering New Destinations A Breeze

airbnb-logoAs the premier spot online for listing and booking short-term housing accommodations, Airbnb has already seen huge growth since being founded in 2008. It announced just last week that it had hit 10 million guest nights booked in total, with 200,000 active property listings on the site. But now that Airbnb has kind of reached critical mass, it wants to make discovering new spaces a little easier, a little more social, and a little more joyful for its users. To do that, it's rolling out a brand new site design and a new iPhone app, both of which are designed to let users navigate lists of popular destinations, editorially curated content, and spaces that their friends like. It's also introducing Wish Lists, enabling its visitors to create Pinterest-like collections of spaces to stay in.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? Rielle Hunter says she and former presidential candidate John Edwards have ended their relationship.

Hunter told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday that she and Edwards were still a couple until late last week, as details from Hunter's memoir became public. The breakup was painful, but Hunter said Edwards will still be involved with their daughter, Quinn, who is 4 years old and lives with Hunter.

"We are a family, but as of the end of last week, John Edwards and I are no longer a couple," Hunter said on Tuesday's show. "We decided together to end it."

Asked why the relationship ended, Hunter responded, "I think that's private." She referenced "media scrutiny" the couple had endured but gave no specifics, only saying, "It's hard, and it wears you down after a while."

The book, "What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me," is being released Tuesday through a Dallas-based boutique publisher, BenBella Books. The Associated Press reported on the book last week.

In the book, Hunter describes intimate details about her affair with Edwards, whose campaign hired her as a videographer, and sheds light on his thoughts as federal prosecutors mounted a case against him on illegal campaign contribution charges.

Prosecutors had accused the Democratic politician of masterminding a scheme to use about $1 million in secret payments from two wealthy political donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

According to Hunter, Edwards told her he would probably wind up in a low-security prison in Virginia if he was convicted, and Hunter said she planned to move nearby with their daughter if that happened. A judge declared a mistrial last month, and federal prosecutors have opted not to retry Edwards.

Hunter's memoir also includes intimate details about her affair with Edwards as his wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer. On Tuesday, Hunter said she felt it was necessary to tell the truth about her relationship, even if doing so was painful for her, Edwards or his other children.

Saying that she still loves Edwards, and that she believes he still loves her, Hunter said Tuesday that she was unsure of the future.

"We'll see what happens," she said. "I have no plans."

Off the Bench: Tebow mocks Quinn, ND

You?d think that someone like Tim Tebow, who is mocked on an almost daily basis, would be sensitive to doing the same to others. Not so, folks. Tebow was speaking at the University of Florida Gators Boosters meeting on Sunday, where he had just been named a member of the board, when he began talking about Quinn and the Irish. He didn?t mention Quinn directly by name, but he didn?t have to.

Tebow:

?I had a teammate at Denver who played the same position as me and he went to the University of Notre Dame. He would brag about his university, how great it was. Most of us in the locker room were like, ?C?mon, we all had opportunities. We chose not to go there.? ? But he talked so much about his university that it became easy. I?d say, ?Your whole team had one guy who ran under a 5.0 40 [yard dash]. Our kicker ran under 5.0.??

Boom! No one told us this was going to be a roast!

Quinn has taken Tebow to task when both were with the Broncos, so perhaps this is payback. My sincerest hope is that Quinn gets wind of this latest jab and fires back. Because a Tim Tebow-Brady Quinn war would be the whitest, geekiest thing ever, and would make the internet explode.

Preventative Maintenance For Your Car in North Kansas City | North ...

Preventative maintenance isn?t a ?cool? topic, but in today?s economic climate it?s more important than ever to keep your car in top running shape so that it will last as long as possible ? without costly repairs. By performing a few minutes of maintenance once a month, you can help ensure that your car will be running for a long, long time.

?

With just a little practice, the following tasks can be done in less than 15 minutes. It might take a little longer the first few times you run through the steps, but a few minutes now prevents lengthy waits in repair shops, so it?s worth it. Just follow this list:

  • Check the air filter?- If you can?t see any light through the sides, drop it lightly on a hard surface and look again. If you still can?t see light, it?s time for a new filter. Regardless, your air filter should be replaced once a year or each 20,000 miles.
  • Check the belts?- If any of the belts has more than 1/2? of give when you push it, you might be able to adjust it if the belt is in good shape. If any belt is cracked, frayed, or shiny on the inside it should be replaced regardless.
  • Check the battery?- If the battery has caps or bars on top, carefully pry them off and check the water level. If low, fill to the top of the metal plates with distilled water. If there are powdery deposits on either of the terminals, they?ll also need cleaning. You can clean the worst of these deposits with a small amount of Coca-cola followed by a small amount of clean water for a rinse. Dry the terminals completely then coat with a small amount of petroleum jelly to keep the corrosion from coming back.
  • Check the radiator ? Most modern cars have a coolant overflow tank, so there?s usually no reason to open the radiator. Check to make sure the fluid is at the ?full? line. If not, add a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. Most modern engine blocks are aluminum and require the protection of coolant, so only add straight water in an emergency. Straight coolant is overkill. Never open a pressure cap while the engine is hot!
  • Check the hoses ? walk around the front of the engine compartment and feel/look at each hose. Any that are cracked, bulging, or excessively soft should be replaced. It?s cheap and easy to replace a hose before it bursts. If you lose on on the highway the tow charge alone could be 6x the cost or more.
  • Check the oil dipstick ? pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a clean lint-free rag (or paper towel). Put the dipstick back in the engine and check it again. The oil level should be between the ?add? and ?full? lines. If the oil is dirty or smells like gasoline, it?s time to change it.
  • Check the transmission fluid ? the transmission dipstick is nearly the same as the oil dipstick, but it?s usually a little harder to spot. It?s checked in the same manner, but if you have to add transmission fluid, it?s added via the dipstick tube. After you check the level, rub a little of the oil between your fingers. It should be pinkish and clean. If not, you?ll need to have your mechanic replace the transmission fluid. This job is far less costly than a new transmission.
  • Check brake fluid ? If your car has ABS, refer to the owner?s manual before checking this fluid level. Otherwise, open the top of the brake fluid reservoir and check that the level is between the low and high level marks. Be careful to not get brake fluid on anything painted- it eats paint. Also, brake fluid can be ruined if it?s left exposed to air in as little as 15 minutes, so be sure to keep the bottle closed tightly. If the brake fluid looks dirty, have your mechanic replace it. On average, brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years.
  • Check the power steering fluid ? again, make sure the fluid level is up to the fill mark.
  • Check the wiring ? if any wires look frayed or if there is lots of corrosion on them, they?ll need to be replaced by your mechanic. Again, this job is far less expensive if you replace them before they fail.
  • Check the washer fluid ? while not as critical as the other fluids, it?s worth taking the time to check and fill your washer fluid while under the hood. If you?re in a cold area, it?s important to use a solution that contains antifreeze.
  • Check wiper blades ? Obviously you?ll know when your blades are getting old when they start skipping or streaking during a rain storm. Replace them as soon as you notice a problem.
  • Check tires ? Check the air pressure in your tires. Properly inflated tires will help improve your gas mileage and will help with even tire wear. If your tires are worn, get them replaced for both safety and to prevent a costly road call.

Fifteen minutes of effort once per month can prevent hours of towing and repair shop waiting as well as the costs associated with them. These maintenance items can also help your car las as long as possible.

You Won?t Find Friends Nearby Anymore: Facebook Pulls Its Location-Aware Mobile App To Add New Friends

FFN errorSo much for that! Just as quietly and quickly as Facebook had put "Find Friends Nearby" online on Sunday, the mobile service to instantly add new Facebook friends in your vicinity is no longer there. A visit to the mobile web page is blank, and a click on the "Find Friends Nearby" tab in the iOS app goes to an error page. When we first broke the news about Facebook's new feature yesterday, the prospect raised all sorts of questions about what Facebook might do in this space. The app lets users find other Facebook users near them, and then quickly add them to their network: the service looked very rudimentary, but the concept offers potential ideas for how Facebook could develop such a service going forward.

Obama, Romney Both Winners at Latino Conference

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- A high-profile gathering of Latino public officials turned out to be a win-win for President Obama and Republican Mitt Romney, according to interviews with those who attended. Democrats did not take Obama to task for waiting so long to stop deportations of young illegal immigrants, and Republicans expressed relief at Romney?s presence and softer tone.

?I think people are ready to give both of them, really both of them some pass,? said Ron Garcia, a Republican from Southern California and a member of the board of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. ?There?s some time now to digest what the two candidates have to offer.?

The fast-growing Latino community is a pivotal voting bloc in several battleground states, including Florida, Colorado, Nevada, Virginia, North Carolina and Arizona. Obama won two-thirds of the Latino vote in 2008 and is doing even better than that in some polls this year. Analysts estimate that Romney needs to win as much as?40 percent of the Latino vote to win the White House, a goal he is not reaching in several states and one made harder by the tough immigration rhetoric he and other Republican candidates employed during the primaries.

Obama?s standing with Latinos was reflected in the enthusiastic cheers and multiple standing ovations he received at NALEO. Better yet for him: the only subject that came close to generating as much fervor as his new policy on undocumented youth was his mention of the Affordable Care Act, a toxic subject in much of the country.

?I was very moved by it,? said Mary Rose Wilcox, a Maricopa County supervisor from Phoenix, Ariz. ?I saw a toughness that I had not seen the last time he came to NALEO and I like that a lot, because he has done so much -- in terms of not only what he did with the executive decision (on young immigrants) but also with the economy.?

Her chief of staff, Terri Leija, said Obama?s speech motivated her to get out the vote.

While Obama had a natural advantage at the conference, Romney benefitted from offering his own ideas for immigration reform in front of a polite, if unenthusiastic audience. His proposals, aimed in part at keeping families together and highly educated foreign students in the United States, allowed him to move away from his much-scorned ?self-deportation? language and reintroduce himself as a general-election nominee sympathetic to the concerns of Latino voters.

?I was a little upset with him over some of the harshness with respect to immigration in the past, ?but what he said today was something I find appealing,? said Juan Zapata, a self-described moderate Republican who chairs the NALEO Education fund. ?Softening that rhetoric with regards to immigration will definitely go a long way towards helping Republicans.?

If Romney?s speech was part of the learning process of how to speak to Hispanic voters, ?he?s on the right track,? said Longwood, Fla., city councilman Bob Cortes, a Republican.

Key to the satisfaction of several Republicans at the conference was a sense that Romney did not outright reject the ideas behind the DREAM Act, legislation that would create a path to citizenship to people brought to the United States illegally as children, if they pursue a college education or military service.

However, several Democrats -- including Obama -- pointed to Romney?s emphatic opposition to the DREAM Act during the primary campaign. Many called Romney?s ideas vague and accused him of deliberately avoiding saying whether he would overturn Obama?s new policy of letting young undocumented immigrants apply for temporary deportation reprieves and work permits (Romney said in his speech he would propose comprehensive reform that would ?supersede? Obama?s order).

?This is clearly a contrast between action and words,? said Texas State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, a Democrat. ?We heard a bunch of great ideas about immigration policies, but we know that when Gov. Romney is fundraising in other parts of the country, he talks about vetoing the DREAM Act, building walls, doing things that take Latinos back for generations.?

Many gave Romney credit for appearing at the conference even with the knowledge that the crowd would be largely comprised of Democrats supportive of Obama. ?I think he basically showed them that he did care one way or another, he did believe in the Latino vote and that he did believe that immigration is an issue,? said Republican political consultant Esteban Ferreiro. ?I think he did what he needed to do within his beliefs.?

Even Democrats like Utah State Senate minority leader Ross Romero said Romney?s intentions seemed sincere, even if his policy proposals were too general. ?The fact that he spent 20 minutes, 30 minutes walking the rope line after his speech said to me that he knew he had work to do, he knew that he needed to make those one-on-one connections, and the fact that we were respectful when he was speaking lent for that opportunity,? Romero said.

Romney is unlikely to make much headway with his attempts to convince the Hispanic community that the president is taking their votes for granted. Most Obama supporters, like Leija, blame Republicans in Congress for blocking immigration reform. And as for the charge that Obama broke a promise by not appearing at NALEO in every year of his presidency?

?I?ve been a member of NALEO for 12 years and I?ve never seen Gov. Romney here,? Martinez Fischer said. ?The fact of the matter is, [Obama is] the president of the United States and he?s the leader of the world and we don?t expect him to be at every place every time we have a convening. But we know where we stand within his policies.?

England, Italy exceeding expectations at Euro 2012

KRAKOW, Poland (AP) ? Italy is restoring pride in a tarnished national game while England is shaking off past inhibitions.

The European Championship is turning out better than expected for the English and Italians, who meet on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

The Italians are providing a welcome distraction from another match-fixing scandal at home after setting out in the tournament under siege from fans ? and the police.

England also entered Euro 2012 at a low ebb after a hastily appointed new coach was given the task of putting together a team which could just compete credibly.

But they've already managed to register a first competitive victory over Sweden and triumph over the host of a European Championship when they beat Ukraine to advance as group winners.

In Kiev on Sunday, England's task will be to chalk up a more significant first ? beating a major soccer power in the knockout rounds of a tournament away from home.

Not surprisingly, coach Roy Hodgson believes that victory would give England "a bit of an extra glow.

"It would put one of those nasty statistics for a team of England's stature to rest," he said.

Previous knockout victories outside England have been restricted to the World Cups against Paraguay (1986), Belgium and Cameroon (1990), Denmark (2002) and Ecuador (2006).

England's last meeting with Italy in a tournament saw the hosts win the third-place match at the 1990 World Cup. Italy also defeated England 1-0 in the Euro 1980 group stage.

While England is battling the weight of history, the Azzurri are progressing at Euro 2012 despite Italian soccer being immersed in police investigations. It's not unfamiliar territory for the Italians, who won the 2006 World Cup after a domestic soccer scandal.

Defender Leonardo Bonucci remains on the squad despite being investigated for allegedly helping fix matches while he played for Bari in Serie B in 2009-10.

Keeping the Euro 2012 run going is helping to restore some pride in Italian soccer, though the side plays down the trouble back home.

"We don't really take it as extra motivation ? this team always has great professionals and great players," midfielder Daniele De Rossi said. "It's just a characteristic that Italians carry. Overcoming difficulties is in our DNA."

Pride appears to have been restored in the England team for very different reasons.

Fabio Capello's sudden resignation in February threw the side's Euro 2012 plans into turmoil. But like Italy, the English progressed through the group stage unbeaten and even the public back home appears to be falling back in love with the team.

"There's definitely a spirit there," midfielder Scott Parker said. "People say spirit doesn't win you tournaments, but ... ultimately, that's our base. I'd like to think we have that base back."

"Trust me," he added. "It goes a very long way. You don't want to be surrounded by negativity, or reading things that aren't nice about yourselves or the team."
