Miley Cyrus Lashes Out Against Death Threats, Mean Tweets
Miley Cyrus had a great time last night, celebrating the Oscars with boyfriend Liam Hemsworth at two locations: Elton John's annual viewing party and then the subsequent Vanity Fair bash.
But the singer/actress had anything but a great time prior to hitting Hollywood, Tweeting up a storm in response to a few seriously hateful individuals.
"U have nothing better 2 do than hate?" Miley wrote in response to remarks (since deleted) that she "dresses like white trash" and is "so f-cking hideous," adding: "That saddens me. Im surrounded by love Im sorry 4 whatever happened 2 make u so bitter."
Moreover, the barbs went far beyond commentary on Miley's fashion sense (which has her beating out Kim Kardashian at the moment anyway. Take that, haters!)
"I wont tolerate someone telling me 2 die," Cyrus Tweeted, taking both the morons who made such threats and the social network itself to task: "Twitter needs to take some responsibility and make it a safe environment."

ESG is legendary ? whether you know it or not.
Bound by beats and blood, the Scroggins sisters formed seminal punk-funk band Emerald, Sapphire and Gold ? better known as ESG ? in the late 1970s.
Now embarking on its final tour and slated to release an album called ?Closure,? ESG?s last West Coast appearance will be Saturday at Mezzanine in The City.
?We?ve been doing this for nearly 30, 40 years,? Renee Scroggins says. ?The travel and the wear and tear is beginning to affect the body.?
Siblings Renee, Marie and Valerie will only be together for the San Francisco show, a rare treat because the band?s original lineup hasn?t performed in several years.
The South Bronx, N.Y. sisters? first release in 1981 had a unique sound that influenced artists across genres.
The ESG tune ?UFO? is one of the most sampled tracks in hip-hop, used by Public Enemy, LL Cool J, the Notorious B.I.G. and DJ Shadow.
Scroggins doesn?t fully understand the fervor that surrounded the sampling of ESG?s music.
?I?ve listened to the songs that sample ?UFO,? and sometimes it really doesn?t even fit in there, if you ask me,? she says. ?One time I talked to a rapper and he said, ?There?s just something about that guitar. It says something to you,?? Scroggins says. ?I?m like, ?OK ? I hope it says for you to pay me!??
In fact, the surge of sampling led the ladies to release the EP ?Sample Credits Don?t Pay Our Bills? in 1992.
Controversy surrounding copyright laws took its toll on Scroggins.
?I?ve been very skeptical of putting instrumentals on new releases since ?UFO? was sampled like crazy,? she says. ?I get nervous like, ?Oh god, who?s going to sample this? Who?s going to just take it and claim it as their own???
ESG wasn?t paid for the samples for about 20 years, until the law finally caught up with technology in the music-making sector.
Yet Scoggins has penned two instrumentals for the final album. She says to expect ?a lot of funky tunes.?
ESG?s stripped-down, yet heavily rhythmic sound, can be aggressive, a la punk rock, at times. Though the group?s music has been labeled various ways, Scroggins just wants to move people ? literally.
?The thing that makes me the happiest is just seeing the audience go wild ? cut loose and feel good,? she says. ?It?s music that makes you want to dance.?
Dedicating every live performance to their mother, the ladies of ESG knew they had something special when, ?More than anything, our mom was happy with it [the music],? Scroggins says.
Mom was right.

China Sky One manufactures pharmaceutical and medicinal products, as well as diagnostic kits. Why Go To The Trouble To Start A Mastermind Group If It's Going To ...
For the mastermind group to produce successful results over the long haul you?ve got to have the collective belief that you are all in this thing together, no one is special, everybody contributes their share, and share the responsibilities and needs of membership equally.
That is correct, the mastermind group that does not share responsibilities similarly among the members are cursed!
When we share the responsibilities the group stays vibrant, no one begins to burn out while their buddies begin to feel guilty for having a complementary ride on the efforts of other.
In the 21st century, the mastermind group operates on the principle of a flattened hierarchy, everybody is thought to be an equal and shares in the responsibilities. There aren't any permanent leaders, bosses, or supporters, no special treatment for anyone.
Naturally it is human instinct for a few of the people to naturally assume more of a leadership role than others.
While we will not change mankind's nature, we will be able to implement practices that keep the responsibilities equal.
That is the primary reason for a process which insures that no one grabs control of the process or the agenda, overwhelming their less pushy counterparts.
For instance the support roles played by the facilitator and timekeeper are shared and rotated among all of the members.
During a meeting, the facilitator acts as the host, the leader for that meeting. The facilitator?s role is to control the meeting whether in real life or on the phone.
A good facilitator is there to steer when required, then soon out of the way. The stars of the show are the members discussing their business matters and getting feedback and ideas.
It's critical, at the outset of your mastermind group?s formation, to explain the facilitator?s role as a functional one, not a performance one.
The target of the meeting is the significant discussion amongst the members. All else is secondary. The facilitator is to get the meeting on tract and then let the dialogues proceed within the time restrictions of the agenda.
The same holds true for the timekeeper. The timekeeper?s role is to trace the time and little more.
The hidden key to success is simplicity. The simpler the meeting can be, the better. The purpose of the group is to be a source of feedback and perspective to provide each member with discernment and confidence into his or her situation.
Therefore , from the outset, the group wishes to grasp the policies.
At the end of each meeting, the members collectively determine the facilitator and timekeeper for the next meeting. In the event a facilitator or timekeeper is absent, the group members will pitch in to fill that role.
And don't forget about sharing the back room responsibilities.
You never know when the individual that has been handling these and other details gets sick, joins a kibbutz, or sells his company and moves to Bora Bora.
In a volunteer based organisation frequently the responsibilities fall to the 5% who are willing to do them.
Don't let that happen to your mastermind group!

George Huguely V: Guilty of Second-Degree Murder in Yeardley Love Slaying
George Huguely V, a former University of Virginia lacrosse player, has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the slaying of his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love.
A Maryland jury convicted him late Wednesday.
The UVA lacrosse murder case began in May 2010 and gained national attention, after Love, a popular, all-American athlete, was found dead at the school.
There were no obvious physical wounds. Huguely, 24, admitted to having an altercation with his ex, but his lawyer denied her death was intentional.
Huguely pleaded not guilty to six charges, including first-degree murder and felony murder in commission of a robbery, professing his innocence ... mostly.
His defense attorney Francis Lawrence said during closing arguments:
"Yes, George contributed to her death. But no, he didn't kill her ... he left there with her alive, and that is not in dispute. There was no intentional killing."
"She wasn't dead when he left."
After deliberating for nine hours, the jury decided Huguely was guilty of second degree murder, which can hold a sentence of anywhere from 5-40 years in jail.
Huguely was found not guilty on the most serious charge of first-degree murder, but he was also convicted of grand larceny stemming from the same event.

DIET IMPACTS DEMENTIA?: A recent report suggests overeating may greatly increase the risk of memory loss for elderly people.

Overeating has been linked to a litany of health problems?diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke, to name a few. Memory loss, dementia and even Alzheimer's may someday be added to that list, according to the preliminary findings of a study on aging conducted by the Mayo Clinic.
Mayo researchers caution against reading too much into their work thus far correlating caloric intake in the elderly with the onset of mild cognitive impairment (MCI)?the stage between normal age-related memory loss and early Alzheimer's disease. Still, a report they plan to present in April at the American Academy of Neurology's 64th Annual Meeting in New Orleans indicates that overeating may greatly increase the risk of memory loss for elderly people.
In 2006 the Mayo Clinic chose a random sample of 1,233 people in Olmsted County, Minn., ages 70 to 89 years old (none previously diagnosed with dementia) and asked them to fill out a questionnaire describing their diets over the previous year. Participants then returned the surveys to the clinic in Rochester, Minn., after which the researchers grouped the study participants into three categories: those whose daily caloric consumption was between 600 and 1,526 calories; between 1,526 and 2,143; and between 2,143 and 6,000. Each participant then underwent a series of MRI brain scans and cognitive tests.
Correlating caloric consumption with test performance, researchers concluded the odds of having MCI more than doubled for those in the highest calorie-consuming group compared with those in the lowest calorie group. There are several caveats to these findings, however. For instance, the report did not take into account the types of food and beverages consumed nor did it examine the rate at which food was eaten throughout a day.
Study author Yonas Geda acknowledges that the research to better understand the link between MCI and eating in the elderly is still preliminary, but he notes that it does create a foundation for more extensive cause-and-effect research, which he and his colleagues are currently pursuing.
Scientific American spoke with Geda, an associate professor of neurology and psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., and co-chair of the clinic's Neuroscience Discipline Oriented Group, about his team's efforts to identify the causes of memory loss in the elderly and what they plan to investigate in their ongoing research.
[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]
What is mild cognitive impairment?
With MCI, the person is not demented. The person is functioning well, but when you test them on certain memory tests they do poorly as compared to their age-, education- and sex-matched peers. We observed that a daily caloric intake in excess of 2,143 was associated with a significant chance of having MCI. If I am consuming more than 2,143 calories per day, my odds of having MCI is twice that of somebody that consumes 1,526 calories per day.
How did researchers test for MCI?
We determined whether participants had MCI based on three hours of testing when participants came to the Mayo Clinic to turn in their questionnaires. This included testing of memory, language and also sense of direction.
How was memory tested?
Participants were asked to memorize 15 different words and then asked over timed intervals to remember as many words as they could. A normal person might remember seven out of 15 words the first time they are asked, then maybe 10 words the second time and 13 words the next time. After a half hour the person might remember 12 out of 15. With Alzheimer's patients, if give them 15 words to remember, they'll remember two initially. After a half hour, they won't remember any.
Were any participants found to be suffering from MCI?
Yes, 163 people in the study were diagnosed with MCI. So then you divide the participants into two groups: The 163 with MCI, and the 1,070 who tested normal. Then you compare the caloric intake between the two groups. And then you say that caloric intake was higher in the MCI group as compared with the normal group, therefore the higher the caloric intake the higher the chance of having MCI.

Honoring Patients? Treatment Choices at the End of Life: New Tools, New Challenges, New Limits
Hamline University School of Law, Saint Paul, MN, November 8-9, 2012
The Health Law Institute at Hamline University and the Hamline Law Review seek proposals for presentations and papers for our all-day fall CLE/CEU Symposium on Friday, November 9, 2012. Our Symposium will examine the problems and solutions to issues currently arising at the intersection of medical law and end-of-life care.
TOPICS: Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Legal and medical issues concerning the use of POLST orders, especially in Minnesota;
- Institutional and community responses to medical futility disputes;
- Legal issues involved in end-of-life planning, including advance directives, health care proxies, DNR orders, living wills and the initiation and cessation of artificial support systems (such as artificial nutrition and hydration);
- A view of the decision-making process in end-of-life cases from the perspective of the parent, the family and the medical provider;
- Decision-making for the ?unbefriended? patients without surrogates;
- Role of lawyers, guardians ad-litem and the courts in end-of-life cases;
- Applicable legal and medical standards in end-of-life cases;
- Ethical issues related to the roles of attorneys, medical providers and family members in end-of-life decision-making; and

Your MAGI, if you are single, $65,000 or less (married-filing-jointly is double that or $130,000). You can still take advantage of as much as a $2000 in tax deductions if you income, as a single person, is between $65,000 and not more than $80,000 (again it will be twice those amounts if you are married-filing-jointly). If your income is any higher than these figures you are not going to be eligible for college tax deductions.

CHICAGO (AP) ? A small but growing number of teens and even younger children who think they were born the wrong sex are getting support from parents and from doctors who give them sex-changing treatments, according to reports in the medical journal Pediatrics.
It's an issue that raises ethical questions, and some experts urge caution in treating children with puberty-blocking drugs and hormones.
An 8-year-old second-grader in Los Angeles is a typical patient. Born a girl, the child announced at 18 months, "I a boy" and has stuck with that belief. The family was shocked but now refers to the child as a boy and is watching for the first signs of puberty to begin treatment, his mother told The Associated Press.
Pediatricians need to know these kids exist and deserve treatment, said Dr. Norman Spack, author of one of three reports published Monday and director of one of the nation's first gender identity medical clinics, at Children's Hospital Boston.
"If you open the doors, these are the kids who come. They're out there. They're in your practices," Spack said in an interview.
Switching gender roles and occasionally pretending to be the opposite sex is common in young children. But these kids are different. They feel certain they were born with the wrong bodies.
Some are labeled with "gender identity disorder," a psychiatric diagnosis. But Spack is among doctors who think that's a misnomer. Emerging research suggests they may have brain differences more similar to the opposite sex.
Spack said by some estimates, 1 in 10,000 children have the condition.
Offering sex-changing treatment to kids younger than 18 raises ethical concerns, and their parents' motives need to be closely examined, said Dr. Margaret Moon, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' bioethics committee. She was not involved in any of the reports.
Some kids may get a psychiatric diagnosis when they are just hugely uncomfortable with narrowly defined gender roles; or some may be gay and are coerced into treatment by parents more comfortable with a sex change than having a homosexual child, said Moon, who teaches at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics.
It's harmful "to have an irreversible treatment too early," Moon said.
Doctors who provide the treatment say withholding it would be more harmful.
These children sometimes resort to self-mutilation to try to change their anatomy; the other two journal reports note that some face verbal and physical abuse and are prone to stress, depression and suicide attempts. Spack said those problems typically disappear in kids who've had treatment and are allowed to live as the opposite sex.
Guidelines from the Endocrine Society endorse transgender hormone treatment but say it should not be given before puberty begins. At that point, the guidelines recommend puberty-blocking drugs until age 16, then lifelong sex-changing hormones with monitoring for potential health risks. Mental health professionals should be involved in the process, the guidelines say. The group's members are doctors who treat hormonal conditions.
Those guidelines, along with YouTube videos by sex-changing teens and other media attention, have helped raise awareness about treatment and led more families to seek help, Spack said.
His report details a fourfold increase in patients at the Boston hospital. His Gender Management Service clinic, which opened at the hospital in 2007, averages about 19 patients each year, compared with about four per year treated for gender issues at the hospital in the late 1990s.
The report details 97 girls and boys treated between 1998 and 2010; the youngest was 4 years old. Kids that young and their families get psychological counseling and are monitored until the first signs of puberty emerge, usually around age 11 or 12. Then children are given puberty-blocking drugs, in monthly $1,000 injections or implants imbedded in the arm.
In another Pediatrics report, a Texas doctor says he's also provided sex-changing treatment to an increasing number of children; so has a clinic at Children's Hospital Los Angeles where the 8-year-old is a patient.
The drugs used by the clinics are approved for delaying puberty in kids who start maturing too soon. The drugs' effects are reversible, and Spack said they've caused no complications in his patients. The idea is to give these children time to mature emotionally and make sure they want to proceed with a permanent sex change. Only 1 of the 97 opted out of permanent treatment, Spack said.
Kids will more easily pass as the opposite gender, and require less drastic treatment later, if drug treatment starts early, Spack said. For example, boys switching to girls will develop breasts and girls transitioning to boys will be flat-chested if puberty is blocked and sex-hormones started soon enough, Spack said.
Sex hormones, especially in high doses when used long-term, can have serious side effects, including blood clots and cancer. Spack said he uses low, safer doses but that patients should be monitored.
Gender-reassignment surgery, which may include removing or creating penises, is only done by a handful of U.S. doctors, on patients at least 18 years old, Spack said. His clinic has worked with local surgeons who've done breast removal surgery on girls at age 16, but that surgery can be relatively minor, or avoided, if puberty is halted in time, he said.
The mother of the Los Angeles 8-year-old says he's eager to begin treatment.
When the child was told he could get shots to block breast development, "he was so excited," the mother said.
He also knows he'll eventually be taking testosterone shots for life but surgery right now is uncertain.
The child attends a public school where classmates don't know he is biologically a girl. For that reason, his mother requested anonymity.
She said she explained about having a girl's anatomy but he rejected that, refused to wear dresses, and has insisted on using a boy's name since preschool.
The mother first thought it was a phase, then that her child might be a lesbian, and sought a therapist's help to confirm her suspicion. That's when she first heard the term "gender identity disorder" and learned it's often not something kids outgrow.
Accepting his identity has been difficult for both parents, the woman said. Private schools refused to enroll him as a boy, and the family's pediatrician refused to go along with their request to treat him like a boy. They found a physician who would, Dr. Jo Olson, medical director of a transgender clinic at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
Olson said the journal reports should help persuade more doctors to offer these kids sex-changing treatment or refer them to specialists who will.
"It would be so nice to move this out of the world of mental health, and into the medical world," Olson said.

Fourth 'Transformers' shapes up for Bay to direct (AP)
LOS ANGELES ? Director Michael Bay plans a fresh take on shape-shifting robots with the fourth installment in his "Transformers" franchise.
Paramount Pictures announced Monday night that Bay will return to direct the next chapter in the blockbuster sci-fi series, due in theaters June 29, 2014.
Bay's third movie based on the Hasbro toy line, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," came out last summer and took in $1.1 billion worldwide.
The studio's announcement said the next "Transformers" will be a new take ? which probably is necessary since star Shia LaBeouf said last summer that he would not return for a fourth movie. Bay's production team will be back, though, including Steven Spielberg as executive producer.
The "Transformers" sequel is part of a two-picture deal for Bay at Paramount. First, he'll direct Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson in the crime tale "Pain and Gain," based on a true story about Florida bodybuilders involved in extortion, kidnapping and murder.
Filming on "Pain and Gain" is expected to start this spring.
